Enjoyed playing Stars! (solo) many years ago on my old PC (Windows 95 OS) (CD circa 1996), but am having problems getting anything to load/run on my new system (Core I5 & Windows 7 OS). I keep gettin a version incompatible error suggesting I need an x32 or x64 version ???. Is there anyone out there with experience or solution to this? Would love to get into an online game but need a bit of solo time to get re-acquainted.

thanks Smile

Windows 7 seems incapable of running Stars on its own. The only luck I've had is running a VirtualBox copy of WinXP.

(edit: I'm running 64 bit)

Thanks for the timely assist Very Happy. The posted responces, about opperating under an XP emmulation, have resolved my problem and i've been running well for several days now.

I do have some experience with Stars! but just hav'nt played since about 1999. I'm quickly getting back up to speed, however, I will be in need of some mentoring (abouth the online play process thru file sharing, race design, etc.).

Are there postings that suggest some scenerio-like objectives? A simple checklist of solo-play, sub-game length goals, would go a long way toward giving us rookies a feal for the level of our pleebhood.

I still have some system bugs to work out, i.e., "sending" e-mail as apposed to BBS posting (need to install Windows Outlook). Am expecting to get this done very soon and start trolling for a game Wink.

One follow-up/newby question (system moderator please re-post in the appropriate discussion group, thnx).

What role does the game moderator play in "vetting" the quality of the starting world/worlds? (I see by the postings that starting locations are semi-forced). In solo play one can always avoid Embarassed the really bad starts. I can easily see getting stuck with a lemon start (due to random chance assignment). Like, a start /w poor mineral concentrations, or low habitability in the secondary system (as in the case if Interstellar Traveler).

Thanks again,
Scott Graham

Many games tinker with starting universes for just thaese reasons. Not all, though. You better head to the "New Games" Forum and see for yourself. Deal

I'm sorta new.. (well, still getting through the tutorial in-game! *hew*), and I am currently playing this through dosbox w/ win3.1 under windows 7 x64.

Is installing windows xp virtually worth the trouble compared to dosbox?

PS: Apologies for hijacking your thread, thankyehverymuch.

I'd call it completly insane to use or suggest an email-provider who announces that he'll read and analyse every single email you write and get... for the purpose of delivering ads to you (without mentioning how to do this exactly nor for how long they'll save the results of the analyse).

Would you agree to something like this when it would be offered by your gouvernment... or, let's say, your best friend?

You're talking to someone who created a gmail account for the sole purpose of managing Stars!-related messages and archiving them for all eternity... Rolling Eyes

Indeed, most ads "targeted" to my Stars!-related messages are highly amusing (Industrial or mining equipment, anyone? Pest control? Detective services?) or outright hilarious when they "target" race names. Twisted Evil

I say let them analyze all they want of my alliance's strategizing and rants on ship design and tactics, and I hope they extract something useful from all that. Very Happy

You're assuming there exists an email provider that guarantees your privacy and/or anonymity. Shocked

Well, anything that leaves your own machine, by whatever route, you can safely say it's public. So Gmail is no better or worse than others, only Google is not making any reassuring-like noises about it. Deal

You'd prefer one who didn't tell you?

Frankly, I'd trust Google before I'd trust any government...and I do.

I have been using a gmail account for quite some time for this exact purpose. I get no spam at all. How weird is that? I must not be triggering the correct trip wires?

Gmail clamps down pretty hard on spam. Twisted Evil

I was talking about the bona-fide side-bar ads. Genuine sellers hoping that I buy heavy drilling machinery or things like that. Deal

What I dislike are the text ads that look obviously like malware sites.

While not exactly on the same subject as gmail ads, I've done a Google search for spybot or other anti-malware, and have seen obvious malware sites displaying ads for their "anti-malware" or "anti-virus" software when I know that there are only a few legitimate sites from which the software I'm looking for can be safely downloaded.

It looks like Google is finally cracking down on this as I just checked and didn't see the above problem when searching for 'spybot' or 'malwarebytes'.

Hi,
If you use firefox then installing the WOT add-on (web of trust?) can be used to indicate links to sites which are questionable... the ratings are red for dangerous, yellow for suspicious, green for safe, and blue for not rated.

The textual adds in gmail are also rated as are any links which appear in the browser.

dj

I get ads in Egyptian Arabic trying to sell me shrimp, cotton, and birth control by the long ton.

Hi,

facing the problem that after a PC crash we have an in-game transfer to Windows 7 machine.
Has anyone got an easy to do way how to get Stars! running under Windows 7 for computer dummies like myself ? Sad

Any help welcome! I have posted the question also in the Windows 7 32bit vs 64 bit section

I just setup virtual box on a 7 machine and it works great. PM me if you are still having trouble.
Embarassed Update: I spoke too soon! I am now experiencing pointing device issues within virtual box. Someone please drop me a line if you have experienced a similar issue.
