I'm new to SAH, so:
What version and where to download from?
How do you upload, and download turns?
How does the turn generator work?
Anything else I should know?

The .hst file when playing a solo game? (or when hosting one yourself?) Or do you mean the Hosting Utility to control the game page (gen times, email addresses, ...)

I was asking about how it works from a player perspective.
IE, is the gen time each day fixed? Does it change?

That is different for every game. There are 3 options:
- generate a new turn every 24hrs (or 10, 999, ...) OR when all turns are in. This mean the turn will about always be generated at a different hour: after the last person uploads his turn or when the time has passed you'll get a forced gen and the players that are still out miss it.
You can even have more gens in a day when all players are fast uploaders. Though when gens happen to short after another the time between turns will be added to the next gen.
- generate a turn following a week schedule, for example: MWF at 4:00 AM, or all days of the week at 9:00 PM OR when all turns are in. This means generation happens at the set time OR sooner.
Same comment, more turns per day ...
- generate a turn following a week schedule as above BUT follow it *strictly*. That means the game will *not* be generated when all turns are in. Generation happens *always* at the set time, even if all turns are in earlier.
Some prefer this option since if you are unsure you can make the deadline, you can upload a partial without having to worry that everybody gets his turn in before you can get back and give the rest of the orders.
Hope that covers it ...
