In 2.7 don't detonating minefields show up as pink? They do on my version.

Therefore if you find the pink dot at the centre of your pink minefield you can then check there are no ships (of yours) bar the minelayers in that minefield.

Yup, the detonating fields have a different colour but still routine will get to you here. Once you are used to seeing the same fields at the same spots detonating each turn you'll forget to check them ... that's just human ...

Whenever I play SD I always use detonating minefields - they're fantastic to overlap with any of the other 2 types of field.

Of course you use them, even without overlap of the other types they are what makes an SD an SD! But do you always use them as a continuously detonating perimeter? (or at a WH exit point for that matter)
In combo with speeds they are very nice, the speeds have a higher chance to catch tress-passers than the standards and since you can detonate the ships that get caught will still get damage. Grin

In reply to Micha's points...

-if a minefield is in a position to detonate it then chances are you wont forget to replenish it.

Sure, but a lot can go wrong, like below you point out the fleet limit, if you have a border of 500ly you can't have one minefield since it will cover a lot of your planets too, so you need say 10 fields with also 10 fleet of MML to replenish them, maybe you need to remove those MML from his MF to be able to do a chaff sweep and you forget to put them back ... ?
Or mabye the MML is laying too many mines so you turn it on/off sometimes so the field stays about the same time, easy to forget to turn it on again ...

-I make sure that every (or at least as many as I humanly can) ship I build can withstand at least 1 detonation if I'm using detonation... it's like a safety net of <<insert name of preferred armour here>>

Chaff, SFX, colonizers, the smaller bomber hulls, the smaller transports (and probably LFs too), you can't make those detonation resistant (some hulls not at all, SFX is one of those and no you're not IS so you can't use the croby. Wink) or at least not without making them much too expensive.

-a LONE mml? I've always found the 512 fleet limit and 512 field limit is a killer for SD... so why a LONE mml?????

Really, the 512 minefield limit is much worse, at least the 512 limit will eventually hurt all (bigger) players. And trust me with an SD enemy the amount your sweepers you will be using will also push you to that 512 fleet limit. Grin
But true the fleet limit will hurt you a bit sooner that the other players.
Another limit that will also hurt you more is the 16 ship design limit (just as AR is hurt by the starbase design limit), you are most likely using at least one extra mine-layer design. (SDs with remote mining are hurt even more!)

-one word for this... "bugger".

Well, usually you will be blowing up your allies fleets. Laughing

And another thing, those border/WH fields will get swept, so your mine-layers may suddenly make a field in a somewhat different position (if they weren't laying mines in the centre of the fleet), suddenly they are covering orbits ...

Well .. I think that it all comes down to how much time and MM you want to spend on keeping up your continuously detonating minefields (you know what they say about SDs Grin). If you are dedicated enough than the points I mentioned can be handled ...
