It's one reason MS software is so bad.. they maintain backward compatibility at the cost of everything else - usability, supportability, security....

There are a lot of 32-bit-only programs, though - 64-bit OSes only became truly standard a few years ago, and until then anything which didn't have the manpower to maintain two versions had to be 32-bit.


Very few that have any need to be 32 bit.
Producing 64 bit is basically a case of changing a switch on the compiler... heck I used to compile all my software for multiple chip architectures, 32/64 bit really isn't something that requires double the maintenance.
