Can you share some screenshots of how stars looks in the setup?
I've had bad experiences with dosbox and uncomfortable GUIs / how tough it is to use my mouse in dosbox.

For the record, here are the issues I've had with Wine/Kubuntu/VirtualBox stack:

1. Auto-backup of saves is disabled. This is probably a permissions issue related to keeping Stars! and its files in a shared folder, as I do, but I'm not 100% sure. You can still back them up manually just fine.

2. Selection cursor on the map is misaligned. Selection point is aligned to a point slightly left of the tip of the cursor.

3. Different bolding of certain text than I got in Win XP.
