I used to be an avid play of Sid Meier's Civ games, and over at the civfanatics forums they had a 'game of the month' feature somewhat similar to these challenges.
One nice feature there is that they had separate 'spoiler' forums based on certain milestones. I.e. in CH2 we could have opened a "pre-game" forum (for discussion general tactics without knowing specifics of the game other than the setup) and a "jihad era" forum open to those who have reached the jihad tech. That way, it is possible to discuss specifics without the chance of 'spoiling' anything to players who are still struggling with that part.
(a suggestion for a future challenge similar to this one - set the victory condition earlier, e.g. arm BB's plus owning 6 homeworlds, or something like that. After that point I don't think there will be much challenge, and so much of the final date will be determined by who has the spirit to grind the AI efficiently. An earlier VC will mean that the final date is determined more by early game skill. )
