A playing host should be careful with extending gen time or placing the game on hold when that benefits the host as a player or the host's allies, and I generally avoid doing so, or give as long warning as possible about it, so the other players know what to expect.
I did however place the game The Wheel of Life IV (where I am playing host) on hold without warning because I needed a hold. I explained the reason for the hold in the "Message from game host" section of the game page, and mentioned that I would do that for any player in the same situation.
I did not get any complaints about that hold, but then, the reason was that my HD had crashed, so I had to get a new HD and reinstall Windows and all software, and that of course delayed when I could submit my turn. Fortunately I had backup of all important data, so all that was lost was the cost of a new HD and a lot of time.
That new HD also has a few benefits relative to the old one. Then new HD is quieter, faster and (according to the store clerk) much more reliable. It is also 1 TB instead of 500 GB, but that was because the store did not have that model in stock in the 500 GB version.
I know some store clerks will try to sell the most expensive product, but that store is on a stretch of road with 20+ computer hardware stores within 500 m, so those stores have to compete on quality of service in order to survive. The real name of that street is "Falkoner Allé", but that stretch of the street is also sometimes referred to as "Silicon Alley"
