You obviously didn't read my posts!!! Pretty much the opening part of the thread because I am against the war, but I justify it. I have my reasons and my dounts based upon what I have been told, some of which I believe, some of which I don't. I'm basing my opinions on what I have learnt, what I know from my knowledge of history and politics and most of all from that in-built "bull#### detector" that we all have (with varying degress of accuracy).
|
You are right, I could not finish the thread and I did not see there where 2 pages aready. In fact I was feeling so bad after reading Zoid's serie of "I believe" that I could not focus on the next messages and went directly to express my feelings. Sorry for all the rambling, it was not particular attack upon any of you and I was more expressing the fact this war makes me sick and I cannot really explain why. This is the world I live in after all. Why should it be so difficult to accept it? I was not really making a point (you can rightfully blame me for that), in fact I did not want to participate in the thread. I just suddenly needed to say how I felt. That was selfish and I'm not proud of it. I was not expecting extreme opinions here, it took me by surprise.
Quote: | I wouldn't say me and Zoid are agreeing with each other!! But at least we're friendly, not making personal attacks and calling each other "brain washed" etc... In fact I have the utmost respect for Zoid because he is making a solid and strong arguement based mostly upon the situations he has been in and can empathise with - situations that I, thankfully, have never been in and hopefully never will.
|
Well I cannot say I agree either. I respect his career and as I say I understand his viewpoint. I still believe that in the army your are brainwashed. You are also at work (I know well that one), you are when you look TV, you are when you live in a non-democratic community...
Quote: | I NEVER said the true reason for the war on Iraq (note the Q) was to "restore" democracy because (A) there is no democracy to restore and (B) imposing (because thats a more accurate description) democracy ISN'T the main goal (I believe the main goal is to end Saddam's regime and to eliminate WOMD production facilities.
|
I'm not willing to argue here on that. I would only note this: "end saddam's regime and eliminate WOMD" is not a final goal. It's only a mean to reach a further goal. Like when you analyze a problem you should always search for the ultimate cause, when you look at motivations, you should look for the ultimate goal.
Quote: | Good vs Evil is such a black and white term. The removal of Saddam in my eyes is a good thing, war is a bad thing. As such I am against the war 100%, but now it's started I'm in the position of "Now it's started they better do it quick, do it right, and do it well. If they fail there's a huge price to pay... of which many innocents will have already paid themselves"
|
That would correspond to my main line of thinking as well. Grey Zone in most situations.
Quote: |
I don't believe in ANY religion - but I don't see what that has to do with this war? It's not musilms vs hindus or catholics vs protestants or anything like that - it's Modern World Republics vs Middle East under-developed dictatorship.
|
There is quite an important debate in laic Europe about the way Mr. Bush uses repeatedly the religious vocabulary to justify his decision. Of course this is part of the anti-american tendency dominant in Europe, and China and Russia have not cared to note it officially. Still I am strong on laicity and am shocked by that, especially in that context where the muslim world (including huge communities in occidental countries) is becoming more and more sensitive to this.
Quote: | From reading this thread I'd say Autohost forum is VERY broad. We've got both extremes, the non-voters and the middle ground: Yourself being the hardcore Anti war, the 6 people that clicked "kill 'em all.... in fact.... gimmie a gun", the people who haven't posted due to lack of interest/opinion/effort/etc... and then the middle ground that varies accordingly.
|
Can't agree on that. I'm not a "hardcore antiwar", as I said I dislike Germany's position. I believe that war is sometime the only way to go. But it should be the very last ressource when all else fail. I can't see it's the case here, and I don't think it will be when the next war starts.
And I can't agree that it is an open forum. Where are the representants of middle east, the arab world and the muslims? If you think it's right to have a pro-US extremist ready to go to war against France because they disagree with the US(*), don't you think you would need some radically opposite point of view? Is there any common Iraqui saying how he feels seeing his old country wounded and humiliated ("we could not fix it ourselves"), even if he's not pro-Saddam?
(*)yes I took it personnally but that was a very focused attack on French people, so why not? I know, "we could not fix it ourselves" as well.
Quote: | In future I'd read a post and make an informed decision before swaying in with an opinion - and it might be a good idea to back up your views with something a bit solid.
|
Totally agree with that. As I said I was not trying to persuade anyone, I expressed feelings of despair and fear for the future world I and my children will live in. I understand you disliked that, it's my problem and I should not have bothered you with it. Regarding your last point, I live in latinamerica (mostly and strongly antiamerican although economically dependant so politically aligned), I am part of several discussion groups here in Panama (a country "liberated" by the US) trying to create some reflection about the situation, but quite frankly, I start to loose hope and get to the conclusion that extremist points of view hardly change, whatever you do. Auto-brainwashing?
Sorry for having been disruptive. Bye now,
YucaF
