I have no problem with a change to the alliance rules, but no problem keeping them the same.
The only real advantage in going from neutral to friend is free passage through minefields and use of stargates. Potential for backstabbing increases with stargate use, of course, so I can imagine the Maera might be very particular about whom they set to friend.
With the stargates of the Sofians, that would be a nice benefit for those opposing the Joat alliance. But on the same token, the Joat alliance would be able to gate in Rancor fleets offensively and also gate to Rancor planets when they are attacked to aid in defense.
Hard to say which rules set would benefit the Mycelium (who have no stargates) at this stage of the game. Therefore, I am comfortable bowing out of the discussion and allowing the other players to reach a decision.
