What does the Waypoint Task "Route" do?

The question is pretty much in the topic...

I've always wondered if there was a difference between routing a ship around rather than simply selecting no task...

The most obvious use of this difference, if there is one, would be that one of those force the ship to go somewhere before continuing to the next waypoint. The other one would simply route the ship to the next waypoint as soon as something happens (like a battle, mine hit, etc).
