You can keep backups and simply copy the old .m file back into the folder that you use for play.

Find your stars.ini file, open it and under the [Misc] section add:
Backups=100
Or whatever number you prefer.

Also add:
NewReports=1
This gives a more detailed report when you dump your planet information to text file. Useful when exchanging info or importing your data into excel ...
