I just checked back through my games, at year 2440, to see how much my economies have varied...
Lowest I've ever had in 2440 was a rather disheartening 7k That game ("The End") isn't over yet, but the race subsequently conquered most of the universe and now feels unbeatable, barring some genius moves by the surviving races.
Highest I've ever had in 2440 was 23k Sadly I had to retire from that game at that point. I found a replacement player, but he was defeated.
See my point?
There's no substitute for intel gathering. If you don't have PPS, then you should work to estimate your opponents economies and, more importantly, the fundamentals of their races so you can judge their *actual* power, and how this is likely to change over time. Actually, you should do this even if PPS is on... Last game I played with PPS I had 8k at 2440, in the bottom half of the rankings in every category except ship count, and that only because I was using frigates against cruisers... That position came through for a comfortable win too...
