The most important quality of autohost is that it is relied on as a permanent home. So many other sites have come and gone. Of course, there are some minor niggles (downtime, delays) but these are all outweighed by the fact that AH is always here.

There may be room for other hosts (and I think there are some other lesser known ones still around).

When I get time (and a more stable internet connection), I plan on putting up a system to host modded games as AH can't currently handle this.
