It becomes absolutely essential to keep track of the issued serials. If they are generated in a random order, only consistent checking against a database of previosly issued ones before making a newly generated one available can avoid duplication.

I think the Jeffs maintained such a kind of database, as there is somewhere said they supplied new serials to vendors in batches.

One problem we have to face now is that without the database of the Jeffs we have no means of knowing if Rons newly generated serials already exist somewhere in the world, and thus could accidentally join the same game.

Therefore, on top of building a serials database of his own to avoid issueing serials twice himself, Ron has to track (by asking feedback to his 'clients') problems that his serials might trigger and provide a serial replacement service and an honorability disclaimer that clearly explains the issue to anybody involved in a game where problems arise due to duplicated serials. He should then mark the issued serial as already in use in his database and give out a replacement one hoping this one does not trigger the same problem some day.

This should be no problem if autohost stays the only centralised authority for stars! serial numbers from now on, as he only would have to deal with troubles involving any of the serials he issues from now on and these only should occur when people that have a feedback link to Rons database are involved.

In fact, it should prove usefull if everybody that wishes to avoid problems with the serials Ron generates from now on just submitted to him his serial number and personal data, so that they can be included in the database of existing serials that he needs to avoid duplicating ... aborting the possibility of having trouble with Rons serials from the very start of his service (and getting yourself someone reliable to hand over a copy of your serial should you ever loose it).

But of course, he will also have to handle all the rest of the trouble concerning Stars! serials from now on, such as people having trouble because of serial duplication due to number spreading through the internet, the possibility that someone else might ocasionally or intentionally be using an other generator or another copy of the same, etc.

Maybe all this possible trouble might be too much to be done for free, so he might consider charging some kind of fee for his help. If only to avoid being bothered by stupid questions (people get smarter when being stupid costs money, you know).

Happy to know we found a good solution, so we can go on playing the best game ever for another century. Now I know for sure I can put my Stars! serial number in my will. Cool

If we were esteemed intelligent 'enough', they would have contacted us.
If we can not find them, either we are not smart enough, or they are smarter at hiding.
