Bombers of Death vs Packets of...bigger death[ 2 votes ]
1. Bombers! 1 / 50%
2. Packets! 0 / 0%
3. How about both! Twisted Evil 1 / 50%

When initial overseer nubs cost 0, you can build as many as you want. Anyone who could stop a fleet of many thousand super nubs with all the fancy mystery trader toys would have already enough power to have won the game a long time ago...

Technically

Or you could make the fleets a little wimpier and make it a victory method similar to defeating the Guardian in MOO.

This is completely not the idea im going for.

Each approach to 'football' has its advantages. Bombs also take out factories and mines, (not just a pop dodge) and can be aborted (for example someone else gets control of football or both sides negotiate a mutual abort).

I'm not in the know about nuclear technical specs so I am not sure if it is possible to tell a missle to abort or self destruct before it reaches its target, so I doubt a mutual abort is practical.

Here is what I have to say about using bombing fleets instead of packets.

Firstly, there is absolutely no way to defend against the bombing atacks. If you see the fleet coming for you there is nothing you can do accept leave. Starbases are useless. Planetary defenses are also useless as I can simply build enough bombers to kill the planet in a single year, or it would just take a few years. The only thing you could do to stop an impending attack is to take control of the nuclear footballs from your attacker, which may not be practical to accomplish depending how much you have to get through to reach the footballs.

Now you may argue that there is nothing you can do to stop a packet either. That is not entirely true. The packets are launched from starbases. The rules allow you to destroy the starbases that launch packets. If you sustain a fleet strong enough to destroy the starbase before it can launch a packet, you have defended yourself until the player who controls the nuclear footballs can react and defend his missle silos in order to begin launching packets again.

Using packets instead of bombers allows two potential defenses (discounting using freighters to absorb packets as this has been banned now) which are killing the missle silos and taking control of the footballs. With bombing fleets you only have one real defense, which is taking control of the footballs. It must be noted that with bombing fleets, you can stop an attack that is in progress by taking control of a football which is untrue for packets. Once the packet is launched it wont stop for anything.

I'm not entirely against using bombing fleets instead of packets if that is what people want to play. Using bombing fleets would allow me to unban ALL races. Yes all. AR's too, because I can simply have 1000 nubians in the bombing fleet to blow up what ever starbase he has. AR's would be extremely volnerable in this game however, so I doubt anybody would play them.

Using bombing fleets brings up more problems. You can easily construct enough minefields throughout your entire galaxy so that the speed of the bombing fleet would be reduced to nothing and they would take forever to reach their destination.

SD races could just blow up enough minefields to possibly destroy the bombing fleets.

I don't think banning minefields would be realistic.

Bombers also won't do any terraforming, unless I use a CA race for the overseer which would be rather interesting. Complete 100% deteraforming. That seems a bit overpowered though. Or maybe its just fun. Watch in horror as the population of your entire planet melts right before your eyes. Twisted Evil

Have an opinion about bombing fleets vs packets? Post it in the poll.

There are bound to be many balance issues besides mine fields if bombing fleest are used, so feel free to post your ideas.

Of course, using both bombers and packets might prove equally entertaining. Could have the overseer clusters in the 4 corners of the galaxy use packets while the center controls 4 bombing fleets. Grin
