Alternate Reality races are designed to live in space, without the constraints of planets. In their current form, they still need planets, though I'm really not sure why - they'd presumably live in orbit of the star, and use the planets only for mining.
Perhaps by the time of FreeStars they'll have evolved a bit more and become true gypsies.
Instead of living on starbases, they can live on freighters themselves - reproducing like Inner Strength, and mining from planets as they go. They don't build colony pods at all, but they have a special Mothership hull (they start with it of course) with a fuel generator and a space dock that allows for construction on the fly. Now in order to construct stuff, they'll need colonists in the mothership fleet, as well as enough minerals. Perhaps the colonists can only reproduce while in orbit of a suitable star, so habitability values would still be important. Or they could simply not have a habitability range. In any case, they'll be totally dependent on remote mining - not only this, but in need of good engines and cloaking as well.
Fun toys for this race could include mobile mass drivers or stargates, as well as bigger mothership hulls.
Naturally they would be enemies of Space Demolition races...
