A couple of interesting old newsthread articles.

Been having some fun with the race wizard lately.

It seems like everyone does tri-immune HE's with low growth rates and nothing else. Today I decided to design an HE that could take advantage of the HE's huge pop growth potential. I put it through a small packed universe and got 25K exactly at 2450.

The Fungus
PRT: HE
LRT: IFE, OBRM, NAS

Hab:
o Grav Immune
o Temp -176C to -16C
o Rad 52 mR to 94 mR
1 planet in 5 habitable

Growth 15% [up to 30% with HE]

1 resource per 2500 colonists
factories 12/6/20 G box checked
mines 12/3/20

All tech but weapons at +75%
expensive tech starts @ 3 box checked.

This was one of the easier test beds for me to manage.
I was able to throw pop around with wild abandon from turn 1
and the high growth rate compensated for the low resource value
of my colonists. I got the privateer on turn 8 and began to occupy anything green I could find.

My growth curve went up pretty quickly. I think I had 2K by 2410. However, I couldn't keep my rate of increase going up like I'm used to with standard monsters and HP races. It stayed linear at about the x=y level until I petered out at 60K. It took 100 years to go from 60 to 70K, since my planets were so limited in size. I had a max of about 1.4K per planet.

This race might be fun in a blitz, but I doubt it would work well in a PBEM. It hits its growth ceiling way to fast. I may play with it some more to see if I can get a higher resource ceiling out of it by trading some of my growth rate to get 25 factories per 10 colonists. I'm also considering increasing factory cost to 7 to do this. I'm not sure which would work better. It depends on how much my planets depend on having a population explosion to get factory growth started
