I had to vote for 1024x768 because my computer cannot go any higher currently since my good quality monitor crapped out. In general I would like to play at higher resolution but it will be a while until I can get a new monitor.

I use my computer that has internet at 1024X768, it only looks good there being an LCD screen, but I have an windows 3.1 machine that usually runs at 640X480 (and has stars!, but I bump the size up to 800x600 for that)

I'd also prefer to go higher that 1024x768...but only have a 14" monitor. Sad

Having two 17" monitors at 1152x864 each is really handy. I can stretch the Stars! window so that the map screen covers the entire second monitor and all the data panels are on the right side of the primary monitor. Big hand for big universes!

Kickbacks from working part-time in a second-hand computer shop. Now if only I can find a big game to play in!

1152x864 is nice.

I've played larger too though.

I play with 1600x1200 on my primary machine, and once I got used to it the secondary machine's 1024x768 always looks so small. Though I used to play with 800x600 several years ago I'd have to say that 1024x768 is the minimum, in 800x600 the galaxy map is just too small (yes I do know that you can change the window layout).

If you are doing research for the preferred Supernova resolution, I'd say 1024x768 is the most commonly used. 15 inch LCD or 17 inch CRTs are the standard nowadays, and even 15 inch CRTs do 1024x768 nicely.

Of course, at least judging by the screenshots, the resolution might be less of an issue in Supernova, as the galaxy map window is much bigger than in Stars! 2.6/7 .

Yep, 1024 by 768 is about universal these days... I can even do that on my old ocmputer (although its 43Hz interlaced and I don't think S!SNG is coming out for Windows 3.1)

1152 X 864 for me too. I use a 19" monitor, and could go to a higher resolution but 1152 X 864 is my default and it simply never occurred to me to change it. Now that it's been brought up, I'll probably try viewing some higher resolutions and see how I like it. Smile

When I first began playing Stars it was 640 X 480. You guys remember putting up with that? God... all the games tended to be huge, too. Very Happy

Jeff, are you going to tell us exactly why you ask? Another game, hmmmmm? Bounce

1024 is my default resolution and it looks best on my 19' monitor (also recommended resolution by the manufacturer). I tried several other resolutions to play Stars! but windows don't seem to fit very well (some space is not used on the map for example) and also the letters are a bit too small for my liking. I guess I'm just used to that resolution and feel unconfortable when changing.

In a more complex game I do not think it would be a problem to go higher if I really see an advantage, but for now 1024 is fine.

On the other hand I do not like lower resolutions. On a 19' screen you can see the pixels and Stars! is not so fun with such a small map.

Would play higher if I had a monitor that supported it.

1280 x 1024 on a 21 inch monitor.
It didn't like 1600 x 1200 <g>

A related question. I can slide the main map section to the left cutting out half the left hand panel displays to make the map bigger.
Is there a way to make the map full screen?
Some hidden function key maybe?

Regards

Abbadon

No, there is no way to make the map full screen in Stars! 2.x. If your screen resolution is high enough, you can stack the command tiles you care about on the far left and grow the map as you described. It does make the messages area a bit narrow though.
