Ok, here is a good question, has anyone ever used a -f JOAT in a real game? the last time I used a JOAT was in RWIAB, did quite well, cept for the fact that completly goofed on race design. when I created my race and entered the game I expected to see at least ONE JOAT in the game besides me, well I was dissapointed to say the least, only 1! in the entire game, which was me. I have decided to enter RWIAB II and thinking heavily on either JOAT or WM, maybe IT and SD, or SS, whats the better PRT in -f designs?

I'm playing a factoryless JOAT in a duel i'm in - and I can't say that i'm pleased with the race.

Factoryless CA is the only thing I've played in a "real" game. (and it won! Smirk against all the other factorybuilding races)

As a factoryless it can't hold a candle to the mean little races Sotek and I have been brewing up lately -- I doubt even a CA could - but it's solid and dependable as its name suggests. Your advantages as a JoaT are (1) Inherent scanning to find those breeders faster, and (2) Bigger planets which produce more population. I'd take 20% growth just to maximise that.

The only workable -F races IMHO are SD, IT and CA.

CA is just obvious.

IT is a good one to try. Pop/mineral management is nice and simple. You also get all the usual IT advantages. Since your early wars are dependant upon hitting the enemy quickly - the stargates and early propulsion tech come in handy.

SD because the biggest problem I've had when playing -F is defending my worlds... and SD can do that rather well.

I suppose IS could get away with it too.

In Otaku3 there is a -F JOAT race... he was 2nd in Otaku2 and won otaku1 I think... but he's lagging back in 5th... by a long way in otaku3.

I guess JOAT is a pure economy race really... and -F just doesn't take full advantage of that 20% higher pop (33% if you take ORBM too)

I can't see many reasons why a -f JoaT should be relatively weaker against other -f races.
What could there be ?
The "Start at 4" is one less option/advantage you can take as you start with fewer expensive techs.
Indeed as an IS starting on all techs 0 I felt I rapidly caught people up on tech, so maybe any starting tech is less of an advantage to those who get it.
However it still gets the pop bonus, which in effect is upto 20% more income as the game proceeds.
Can't see the disadvantage of inherent pen scanning.

(I can see the disadvantage of not having it after this game).

As far as RWIAB is concerned, I think it is just that we all thought "everyone else will take JoaT and I want to be different".
Or did Kurt mention in the early game spiel that he'd like to see PRT's other than JoaT and that if we all sent in a JoaT then we might not be accepted for the game ?

My only specific comment about PRTs in the game adverstisement was that I hoped to see non-CA races. That came true in spades since there were *no* CA races in the game as it turned out.

My reasons for picking JOAT in RWIAB is simple, the 33% increase on pop, the higher GR compared to the others, and the innate pen scan ability, which I used greatly. I see nothing wrong with JOAT as being a -f race, and in a -f game (I.E RWIAB) JOAT prolly could be one of the best but a -f WM is a dangerous race to be next to. Confused I learned the hard way Evil or Very Mad

Personally, I'd say CA and IT are the two strongest -f races, for different reasons each.

IT because it can take 20% PGR and *use* it well.
CA because of instaforming.
IT because in the BB era, it can group those horribly spread-out BBs quickly and safely.
CA because of instaforming.
IT because of *fast* acquisition of cruisers to crush people with.
CA because of, yes, instaforming.

JoAT is strong, but not nearly *as* strong.
WM and SD are both very strong if played right.
IS is strong for similar reasons to JoAT.

HE is just too weak in the econ department to afford it.
PP might be very nice, if played just right.
SS could potentially be nice, except that all the SS toys are res-heavy, which doesn't help.
