Did anyone else notice...

Pepin has finally changed his password to match the rest of the team, and I loaded up his turn and saw the following message:

"Your population suspects you are a usurper. Their productivity is off 20% and their growth rate was halved last year. Press 'Goto' to validate your copy of Stars!"

Anyone else notice this? Can someone check this out?!?

Also, Pepin, you might want to revise your production que.. I'd suggest ditching the mineral alchemy, and moving the factory pruduction in front of the mines. You need those factories! And you've already a boat load of minerals on Mustang.

You also might want to think about ditching your Shadow Transport in favor of a MF without the cloak - in order to try an hide your stealthy abilities until later in the game - if they haven't already seen it.

Oh, and you should probably halt all resource your sending to research - change that to 0% for the time being.

Dan

I saw this message too.
What it is is he has the same stars code as someone else in the game - Pepin have you submitted a turn from a different PC to normal and put the wrong code in? Or have you been getting this message from the start of the game?
I got this message once when I submitted a turn from an internet cafe and put in my mate Faz's code as I couldnt remember mine (Faz was in the same game as me).
It maybe that someone else has put in the wrong code and this happened to be the same as Pepin's code.
Faz got messages about being an Usurper as well as me (I got ships rebelling as well and terrorists blowing up mines and factories).

I was afraid of that. Pepin is either using the same serial number as some else in this game, or (more likely because no one else has reported the same problem) he is using a pirated 'I' patch serial number that isn't working with autohost's 'J' patch.

I have sent a message to EDog and Pepin about the situation. We'll need to get the resolved ASAP, we can't afford to play a man down the whole game!

Pepin has missed another turn... what do you guys think we should do about this??

  1. Find a replacement player
  2. Have one of us take over for his race
  3. Forfeit the game because he's had such a lousy start

Let me know,
Dan

I'm thinking we're going to be hosed by his poor start. Unfortunately when we restart the teams are going to get scrambled again unless we use some kind of universe editing tool that allows us to place the homeworlds. We could do that in order to retain the same teams.

You should be our rep to EDog on this, Dan.

I'm in favour of having Dan take over (or someone else if they feel up to it). Of course, if Pepin does come back with a valid Stars key, I'd be fine with him continuing playing.

Well
- I think if Pepin want to continue playing we should encourage it. It seems to be his first (Email) stars game, however he must get a good code as without it his race is crippled (5% Growth rate - he has less pop than I had in turn 1).
On the other hand with bad code and missing turns he wont be a help team wise (Pepin if you think you are going to miss a turn or 2 email one of us and ask if we will caretaker your race for a turn or 2 - I looked after our Glorious Leaders race (Dan) while he was on hols for a week).

As regards replacing him (if he doesnt want to play!) I think that the bad start and the general race set up (No offence Pepin you should have seen the first race I designed they couldnt fight their way out of a paper bag and your race could have eaten them for breakfast) would make some volunteers give up.

One of us (or all of us?) would find it a lot of extra planning to do... (My wife wouldnt let me - says I spend too long playing anyway).

Which leaves a restart Sad not great.

So best bet Pepin carries on, failing that restart only turn 10 so no great loss (Though I have found 2 Greens now Mad )

I'd rather not restart. Let's just play. If they win, no big deal. It's just a game. We'll just try harder.

Just sent the following email out to our team (including Pepin) and EDog:

What is Pepin's upload password?

I can take over for him until he let's us know what's going on. I haven't heard anything from him, and we have a topic in our forum talking about it, but he has yet to reply.

Three of our players would like to restart the game becuase of our lousy start, one would just like to continue with me (or someone else from our team) taking over for Pepin. I'm sort of wavering - honestly, I don't think we stand a chance in this one - but I sort of want to just play it through for the learning experience. I really like the CTF idea and think it will make for some great games - but there is a large 'luck of the draw' factor and I think Pepin really hurt us there.

Dan

Pepin has been rather unresponsive - but I'd really like to hear his end of the story before we do anything drastic. In the meantime, I only hope he won't be too offended if I do a few turns for him. Shocked

Hi
I think the other team will be against a restart - they have all the hassle and none of the current disadvantages.
If they are fine about it great.
If not I say we fight on regardless - Pepins race got off to a lousy start (and will never be a world beater) but the main advantages to his race are the sneakyness - get a few 98% cloaked crusiers in some of our fleets and all of a sudden the enemy cant trust any of his scanners (unescorted Germ Transports oh I bet they have 80 Nubians with them etc etc). They wont know that the sneaky are our bad start race and so will expect more than they can produce - which means they wont be thinking "oh they will only have about 15 cloaked Battleships" but more like "We have found 10 cloaked Battleships - where in the hell are the other 50?? #### move ships to the Flag"
We can still win (they were going to fight with 5 if Soviets didnt turn up I think).

So with non show of Pepin, and others not wanting to restart who wants to continue?
I do - Post Aye if you do too.

Well, as I said above, I think we should continue. With tech trading, we can get Pepin's tech up to reasonable levels, and we can get his race making stealthy penetrating scouts at the very least.

From my point of view, I've got a pretty good start. A green world right next to my homeworld is a piece of luck I wouldn't want to give up because my race is 1 in 12 hab. I doubt a restart would put my in any better position. If I end up on the front line, I could be hosed very quickly.

I don't care either way, as long as somebody volunteers to put Pepin's race "right". Somebody experienced. The 10 years of "cheater mode" and lack of attention that the race has suffered from, not to mention its mediocre design in the first place, basically means we're playing short-handed... and we know the enemy is closer to our flag than we are to theirs because EDog is on the "wrong side" of the line. We're the underdogs, but we can make 'em hurt.

I messed up my start so I am more inclined to a restart but I don't think the other team will agree.

Well.. to update on the Pepin situation.. I haven't heard from him in sometime now, so I've removed his access to the forum.. not like he ever posted anything in here anyhow.. and I've taken control of his (pathetic) Shades.. plus the upload password for this races has been changed to the same as my race.. so he couldn't upload a turn if he wanted too.. he could, however, download our files and see everything we're doing.. unless we want to change our in-game password?

And we're just playing along as normal.. I think we're going to have a rough time of it.. but we might as well play this one out for the learning experience.

Anyone have any questions? Thoughts? Strategies? Seems like this board has been kind of quiet lately.

Dan

Frankly I'm getting tired of "learning experiences". I'd like to actually have a chance to win in one of these games.
