I have an old copy of Stars! with two original serial numbers.

A few days ago, in my office (not at home, where my numbers are) I pulled the battlesim testbed into my VM. I could not get a fleet built because it kept giving me errors and giving away fleets, reducing production, and making fleet move randomly, etc. So I went online and pulled a temporary serial number and got the sim to work.

However, I do not know how to change the number back to my original. Is this going to cause me a problem in the SAH game that I am in? Is there a way to for me to get my original serial number back in?

I just do not want the game to start having problems...

Thanks for any help.

There is a 'Stars.ini' file in the c:\windows directory that you can delete (but you lose your preferences). It contains the serial information in an encrypted format, I think.

I tried changing the name of the ini file. It did lose my preferences, but did not ask for a serial number. And it did not make a new ini file (which I thought was supposed to happen).

I deleted all Stars.ini files, and rebooted my VM, no change.

It turns out there are multiple locations where it can look for the ini file. I found the second one, and delete it, and when I started Stars! again it did indeed ask for the serial number.

I know it used both files because my shortcuts were in the first location (/user/appdata/local/virtualstore/windows), and were not in the second location (/Windows as raptor suggested).

Now to get my shortcuts back...

Thank you.
