Working on the race file now. I had to grab a new HD as well, get a full install and have found that the password I used in my prior files and my .x* files had been corrupting the last few games I have attempted to duel with.
I'm hoping to have something soon and will keep you all posted. Game Parameters again? Medium or small if I am joining?

He said small dense. @ 7 might mean a small tweak, if we go to packed it's 34 per player.
In my experience small is best for beginner games, small packed is 240 stars, that's good for upto 8 players.
It is usually not a good idea to have a length of a year for your very first game vs humans and games in medium universes do take longer.
Something between 4-6 month length (60-80 turns), usual for games in small universes, is still long enough.
But I have to admit I am a bit biased because I don't like longish games.
For your information:
Sparse Normal Dense Packed Size
Tiny 24 32 40 60 400 x 400 ly
Small 96 128 160 240 800 x 800 ly
Medium 216 288 360 540 1200 x 1200 ly
Large 384 512 640 910 1600 x 1600 ly
Huge 600 800 940 945 2000 x 2000 ly
If we do not play in a small universe, an early notice would be nice, I'd need to rework my race design then.

Absolutely agree, I've only been lucky enough to get year 40 in the last few duels, which was enough to get economy started and a few starting military "trades" though I haven't had the opportunity for it to last longer.
I tested a race idea and will see how it fairs. Race file has been submitted with a Small galaxy in mind.
Thanks all for the opportunity! Will have to talk with my other fellows players and apologize for yet another technical setback. This time I've got backups and working on insuring I have a fall back. Who knew such a small sized game could be involved with so many technical setbacks!? LoL

BackBlast wrote on Tue, 07 February 2017 00:51Stars! games involve a fairly significant investment of time. Technical difficulties, vacations, semester or work changes can all effect it. Replacement players for those who cannot continue and hold key positions in alliances.
I didn't really put much thought into this until I started getting excited for this game and can understand a bit better what the impact of not being able to commit can cause a serious problem.
After much thought and reviewing my current obligations I have come to the conclusion that committing to a large (small packed? ) game like this will not be in the best interests of both the game and myself. As much as it pains me to say it, committing to a 6+ month game that will most certainly be fun will require a level of investment of time that my current commitments simply will not allow.
After getting into a few duels, I'm finding that once the "simple" years are over and I begin to cruise (cruiser!) over to around year 30 that getting a turn in on a timely manner simply isn't easy to manage day-to-day, especially given the regular interruptions that I often deal with day in and day out. That, and mixed with what seems to be frequent hardware problems (both PC and financially) in the last two months and I don't feel comfortable committing to the game at this time.
In the meantime, I'd still love to follow along and provide feedback to any players who'd be interested in sharing the game. I'll be maintaining my two other duels at this time but beyond that I can't justifiably join this game and still respect the commitment that others will be investing into this game.
I want to thank everyone up to this point for your patience and understanding with my recent hardware problems and will eagerly keep my eyes open for when my free time will not be so turbulent. I greatly apologize for my initial excitement and eventual removal of my place in this game, as this no doubt is frustrating. I'm honestly disappointed in myself though I know I need to be honest with it to insure everyone has their fair take of fun.
Cheers!
- Christopher

mrvan wrote on Thu, 09 February 2017 09:00Hey guys,
You've not started yet, right?
I might be interested to join. I've never played humans, and I'm sure playing the AI doesn't really count
However, I am travelling quite often and will probably be mostly offline for at least a month in June. So, unless the game is finished by then, I'm not sure if it's a good idea?
What do you think?
Depends on how long we are waiting to start, and how much of a pace we are able to keep. It might be reasonable to be effectively done by June. Then again, it might not.
Lets say we start Monday, that leaves what, 16 weeks? A maximum progression of 2480. In a small, that would effectively eliminate all but the last handful of players. More likely, we start the week after around Monday and slow down circa 2420-2430 to MWF. Which puts us around 2445-2450 when June roles around. Most players will still be alive then unless you are the victim of a very aggressive neighbor.
If we side on pessimism for time frame - yes, very probable that there will be game left come June.

Aaah, that's sad to hear. You seemed quite enthusiatistic.
Your assessment is, by the way, quite right: first turns are fast and easy and from on turn 30 it gets lengthy: much is happening, first wars, first fleets... That's the reason why often enough games slow down to 3 turns/week at that stage.
But thanks for your honesty and giving it some thought. It definetly is annoying when players drop out after several weeks (sometimes even without giving the other players any notice).
The right thing is to think a few month ahead to see wether it is even theoretically possible to play such a game.
Nevertheless every player can get into RL-situations or just plain holiday where playing Stars isn't possible. Best then to notice the game host, so either the game can be stopped for a few turns or a replacement player can be searched for. Everybody is happy, no hard feelings and the player is very welcome again the next game.

I was not only enthusiastic but overly excited! I haven't touched the game itself in a game of this capacity for over 12 years! Being able to interact and have some fun with more than just a duel sounded like a huge and really enjoyable opportunity! It is not only sad but horribly heart breaking. I often have to remind myself that being a first time father and dealing with the struggles of home-ownership really requires me to plan ahead substantially if I am to commit to something like this though, and I don't want to cause a problem for others unnecessarily.

Thank you for the understanding. I was young and naive in my past, and now I want to make it right and commit to something when I know I can follow through on it. Look at me being all adult and stuff!
I'll be following along as best I can in the meantime. Hopefully me branching out to the stars news board and everything helped to liven things up a little bit. Really need to evaluate what kind of time I have going forward.

No hurry... especially not after the weeks (months!) it took us to find enough players and to get in all the race files.
Could you, please, list the players finally taking part and which of them are experienced (or rather their nicks as they will be listed on the game page therefore we know with whom not to ally)?
