I'm currently relearning the game manually by playing the humanoids.

when i go to colonize a planet and then add mines and factories, it sometimes only lets me build 40-70 of each Sad why is this? do note: some of the planets were yellow (terraformable)

EDIT: the green ones (aside from my HW)can have alot more but not max ammount

For green planets, the amt of f/m you can use* (not build) depends on the population you have on ground.
Try uploading the pop into a LF or freighter and you'll see that your usable installations will decrease.

As for yellows and reds, you can build only 5% of the max installations that you can normally build on a 100% planet.
That's until you terraform your yellow into a green (above 5% value).
Also note that you can build a max of 10 defences on a red/yellow planet.

I know my minefields.. but I'm a chaff sweeper.
I used to curse when I got stuck in traffic... till I realised I AM traffic.

A bit OT, so a different post.

I would STRONGLY suggest that you download the stars help file for ready reference http://starsautohost.org/files/e27ihelp.exe
Also go through this: Stars Strategy Guide http://stars.arglos.net/articles/ssg/ssg.htm
You HAVE to read this guide, if nothing else. Read it like a novel Very Happy.
If you still have the passion and perhaps the stamina... then go through the vault on the wiki
These were my starting steps into Stars! ... that kept me playing more than 10 years against the AI, before I finally found SAH Very Happy.

A note on planet usage:
You can classify planets on basis of habitability and generally 80%+ planets are known as breeders, where you keep your pop cap at 25% to 33% (to 42% or 48% depending on your own illogical preference Razz) but not more than that, as the growth rate drops drastically.
Players generally make 50%-80% planets as production planets with 100% cap and factories, while 20%-50% planets are research planets / subsidiary fleet builders (like chaff, support ships etc). 0%-20% planets are research planets + strategic gate planets.

And the amount you can build in total on any given planet depends on the maximum population of the planet, which depends on the planet value.

Your HW is a 100% planet, which means it can hold a million colonists (more if you are JOAT and/or have OBRM; half if you are HE).
On your HW, you can build however many factories and mines that your maximum HW population can operate.
Each turn you will only use as many as the current population of the planet can operate.
If you use autobuild orders, the planet won't build more than what the current population plus the current year's population growth can operate (that way you don't spend resources building factories and mines you can't use right away).

On a 50% planet, you can build half as many factories and mines as on your HW.
On a 25% planet, you can build one quarter as many factories and mines as on your HW.
etc.
