Small test bed I'm running - I colonised a planet when I had virtually no tech (so even a few resources are good).

I had prop set as the research field, with Con as "next" and got a prop artifact.

What happened was that I got one level in prop and 3 in Con Surprised

Is this an argument for setting BIO as your "first field", with a chosen "next", in the early years, when you aren't actually pushing any resources to research?
Then *if* you encounter a Bio artifact you'll only progress one level in Bio, and you get double the chances of resources applied in your *chosen* field.

Very clever idea. Not likely to be a game breaker, but free tech in the field you want instead of bio, during the early years when you are doing no research, could get you that next crucial level (con4 for privateers, con5/prop5 for gates, etc) way earlier than usual. Smile

What we need's a few good taters.

Certainly a good early push, and 'free' docks, privateers, fuel mizer.... could all be really quite important...

If you start with bio3+ expensive it probably won't make a difference because the research required to get to the next level will exceed your artifact bonus. So if con is your *chosen* field you'd probably be better off with research set to another cheap tech e.g. weapons in this case.

Yes - you do need to actually have enough to overflow...

Bio is the "obviously unwanted" field at that time, other field might be easier to delay...

I dunno, Bio 4 is a pretty relevant tech, and you'll only be starting with it if you're JoaT or CA.

Then again, I suppose I'm too used to playing HE, for which the only tech you need to move is Con 3.

You got lucky. Twisted Evil

To be really sure of what happened, we need to know how many Research Resources the Artifact actually gave you, what were your projected Research Resources, and what techs you had as "cheap", "normal" or "expensive". Also, what levels you got, and what's the "distance" to the next levels. Sherlock

Prop level was 1 (from IFE), Con was 0.

This was like 2403 or so - zero resources had been put into research (although I had had an energy? artifact from a previous planet IIRC)

All distances were therefore as standard - Bio might have started at 3 - I can't remember.

So this gave me the FM (for scouts) as well as the cargo pod for a mini-freighter (HE race). Not alot of research will be required to get docks...

IFE's generally not worth it for HE, since the question (due to that enormous point cost) is generally "do you NEED the Miser" rather than "would IFE be nice" - and HE has the Settler's Delight.

The quirks of "select next field to research" have been discussed before, IIRC, but it's far from exact science, and "quirky artifacts" are even less often mentioned. Confused

More accurate tests definitely welcome! Sherlock
