Has anyone ever tried a 12-hour gen schedule for a full game?

I know that the IRL situation for lots of people would prohibit playing in such a game, regardless of the settings.

But are there enough people out there who can carve out enough time twice a day to play a turn in a vanilla game?

Maybe something like 6-8 people, medium sparse distant, AccBBS, no random events, and objective victory conditions.

With little time per turn, probably want to force no alliances somehow. Either no comms allowed or specific rules regarding player relations settings and ban of usual alliance activities (tech trading, ship transfers, etc).

Never slow the gen schedule down, but perhaps allow each player two 48-hour holds when IRL stuff crops up. Perhaps also hold for major holidays.

What we need's a few good taters.

I suspect that such a game would be decided largely by who goes insane first.

I would agree for the starting 40 turns.
After that, would come down to a saner one turn a day.

I mean, even Remorseless had remorse eventually (Razz) and slowed down to 48-hour gens.

12-hour gens all the way through... well, like I said. It'd be decided by who can take that sort of strain for the longest without turning into a neurotic wreck.

You mean, turning even *more* into a neurotic wreck.

But yes, this is a test of will at least as much as it is a test of skill. Think of it as a staring contest.

Also, design your race with the IRL constraints in mind. Make choices that reduce the need for MM. I would probably not play SD in this, for example. Rolling Eyes

Weaksauce! The first 40 turns are easy.

I do like having an accelerated schedule at the start, but I'm wondering if you could have a good game without ever relaxing the schedule.

I suspect there would be a lot of fun stuff in the mid game where you don't have time to testbed and optimize everything, and you have to just shoot from the hip. 2 Guns

lol, agreed.. I was thinking of saying 60 turns.
Anything more than 2460 would mean 3+ hours of stars play a day.

Being a neurotic wreck already is why I'm not signing up for this.

SD would actually be quite overpowered in this setup, just because the MM to face one is so awful that you could basically force your opponents to drop at will.

Reduce MM and encourage speed in the set up. For example have two groups of 10 planets separated by 165ly in each corner. Make all the habs and minerals the same. You have 50 years to wipe out your opponent in your corner. Further in towards the centre have two groups of 2 sets of 10 planets. The winners of the first round get 5-10 turns to relocate completely to them before round 2 starts. Whatever fails to arrive gets scrapped/lost. Have a final pair of 10 planets in the middle. Ban IT and PP to make the set up easier. Judge winner by planets owned. If same, judge by score.

Don't regen. Don't slow down except for pre-specified holidays. Don't complain if your a player. Force gen every 12 hours so the times are fixed. Decide on those times in advance so everyone can work out whether they can do it.

Want more than one opponent? 3 groups of three around a centre of 3 groups in the middle.

An idea shot from the hip.

leonidas.

Reduce MM and encourage speed in the set up. <snip great setup idea>

I like it. Kind of like a tournament, but within a single game. I'll let this one percolate in the brain for a while before I respond.
