I play on a 1600*900 setting, on a 19' monitor... (or was it 17')...
Anyway, my 12 year old (!!) laptop just died and I'm stuck with my VM and a resolution of 1366*768... and it's @^#%$@^#%$@^%#$ paralyzing.
The VM used to be adequate earlier, but the colors have suddenly gone bonkers and it's as bad as dosbox.. I'm sure I messed up with some VM option, so need to rebuild it again.

Anyways, what do you guys play on?

1366*768
1600*900
1920*1080

or one of the other settings...

1920*1080
1600*900
1400*1050
1440*900
1366*768
1360*768
1280*764
1280*960
1280*800
1280*768
1280*720
1152*864
1024*768
800*600
640*400

I know my minefields.. but I'm a chaff sweeper.
I used to curse when I got stuck in traffic... till I realised I AM traffic.

At work I run the VM window non-maximized (better for alt-tab back to work stuff Rolling Eyes ) on a 22' monitor. The 22' monitor is 1680 x 1050. The resolution inside the VM is about 1500 x 900.

At home I run on ye olde laptop with a 12' screen at something like 1440 x 900 because my newer 18' laptop won't run stars. Sad

I just resized my VM to 13 x 7 to see what you were living with. Yeah that would probably drive me crazy. I'd definitely go with the large window layout, and minimize some of the info tiles. I'd rather get the nice big map view than see every single one of those tiles.

What we need's a few good taters.

I'm using dual 27 inch monitors at 1920 x 1080 with Windows 8 32-bit version

No VMs, Stars! runs just like it did in Windows XP. I have noticed that it slows down when I'm over 400 fleets, it appears to have something to do with the way the database of fleets works as splitting & merging fleets takes a long time. (OK, maybe 5 seconds, but that's forever in computer time)

1024*768, Window-Layout: Large
Sufficient for games in small universes.

Was necro-surfing and came across this related thread from 2003!!

Wow.

@ Altruist,
Been playing with 1366*768 (just a tad wider than the 1024*768..)
I do use the zoom in and zoom out options more often though, but at least I'm not uncomfortable playing on this size, as I earlier was Smile

@LittleEddie,
Try disabling the minefields. It made a big difference in one of my games.
If that doesn't work, go for the filters and try cutting down the visible fleets... or remove the ship number count option.
It might make a big difference in time taken to render the universe, after each rename/split/screen repositioning.

I have access to two widescreen laptops, but only one can run Stars! in full 1366x768. So, this is my primary resolution, and the game is very playable - the big advantage of widescreens is letting you have a nice square view of the galaxy, while having all control panes to the side.
The other one can run Stars! on Win3.11 under DOSBox setting, which means 1024x768. Apart from slightly narrowed galaxy view, it makes absolutely no difference.
I played Stars! once on 1280x1024 (using a 19" monitor) - it was great. But anything more than that would be overkill IMO. You rarely need to see half the galaxy at more than 150% magnification. Whenever I need to really close in on the action, I use 400% zoom anyway.

Agreed. I use the + and - keys so frequently while playing that it no longer rises to the level of conscious thought. No matter what the resolution is.

Some "sorting" options in the Fleets report might be hogging the CPU, too. Sherlock

So many Stars, so few Missiles!

In space no one can hear you scheme! Deal
