There's lots of threads here at Autohost, and also at the old r.g.c.s Usenet Newsgroup (under all the spam) where rookie players can get tons of good advice on combat basics, counterdesigning, strategy, tactics, econs of war, and most everything.
Novices can also directly ask the veterans for more specific advice and hope for the best.

| Hmm, i did everything right, and scrappers were good...13% failure 3 times in a row?
But i scrapped it on Space dock - not on normal starbase. Bug?

Since you started this thread for the specific reason of slandering my name, yes I do feel inclined to defend myself. Unless of course you did not write this to me?
Hmm, i dont know how to treat this, but i cannot belive you anymore. You wroted, that you abide to the 5 years of NAP after ending, and then you sweeping my mines in my territory(violation of NAP), and attacking my starbase(Bar None) - violation of NAP - just that fact is backstab.
I`ll inform Swordsmen about your backstabb. They should be aware what you are doing with your neighbours.
I also putted this on Autohost board to consideration of "Elder" players - if they agree that this is treachery and backstabbing, i`ll inform them about you so any player in future will be warned, that Wesley Paro(aka Combat) cannot be trusted. You wanted PR and fame, you earn some.
You killed my joy from this game and you added another enemy to your list - in future games if we both meet again, i`ll do anything to show them how you treat your word, and what do you do to win. I doubt that you will be having allies or any willing to NAP with you...

When it comes to backstabbing and other diplomatic nastiness, it can be fun to air out the laundry "in character". This way we can be mean to the other race, while still being polite to the other player. Sometimes a backstab can be a gift in-game. If the *victim* can put the right spin on the situation they can rally other races to their cause. Players have used this in the past to get the perpetrates allies to turn on them.

Eagle of Fire wrote on Wed, 04 July 2012 17:16 | First, you need to remember you can't get a tech advance more than once in a year.
|
Just to avoid misunderstandings for new players and for the sake of completeness:
Eagle of Fire refers to tech gains from other players by whatever method (scrapping, battle, invasion). No more than 1 tech level can be gained this way per year/turn. There is a specific probability of gaining tech, how to calculate it can be read here:
* Stars! Advanced and Technical FAQ: Guts of Tech Trading.
If there are several events in which you could gain tech, they are worked down following the Order of Events.
Additionally you can gain tech levels via your own research without a limit.
Tech levels gained from the Mystery Trader are as well not counted against the 1-tech-limit.
So altogether it is very much possible to gain quite a lot of tech levels within one year/turn.

Quotying myself:
Quote:i`ll inform them about you so any player in future will be warned Clear intention of warning others, not spreading falsehoods. And i thought, that in this community some pillory for backstabbers exists - in many online games such ingame behaviour are pillored or punished. If not here - good for you.
Quote:If you think I am stupid enough to do that on purpose, well you just can keep thinking that since I have no real need to prove anything to you. I never doubt in your skills as player - earned in game position is something that demands respect. Animosity is not lack of respect.
