Hi.
I'm a long time fan of stars, and are trying to preach the game to some of my friends. But one is meeting a particularly irritating problem

So he is running Windows 7 Premium
Using dosbox, with the files from the wiki.
The password is one of my own (I have bought multiple throughout the years)

The problem is that he must type the code all the time, as though the game doesn't remember that he already have used the code.
We haven't gotten around to multiplayer yet, but it bugs him on every turn in singleplayer.

Do anyone know how to get around this problem?

All help is greatly appreciated.

I am not sure if this will help, but there is comment on the serial number in the section on the stars.ini file here: http://wiki.starsautohost.org/wiki/Files_Used_in_Stars!

The issue with the problem you mention might be the stars.ini file is missing or cannot be found by the game. The link above says Stars! will run without the .ini file - but it will keep prompting for the serial number, which seems to be what is happening.

I use the Windows 7 XP VM and can't really help on dosbox. In my set up the stars.ini file is in the C:\Windows directory as it would be on a normal XP machine. My stars.ini has a line called GameID which I guess is the serial number although it is not recognizable and seems to be written in something like hexadecimal or is otherwise encrypted.

Ps - nt exactly related, but having used dosbox, oracle vm with win98 and oracleVm With winXP, let me tell you that the 3 gb that winXP vm takes is WORTH it....
Throw dosbox in the recycle bin and spend the 600-700mb in getting the files and just use the winxp VM to pay stars.

I agree with this. I have Windows 7 and installed the virtual XP solely for Stars, it is the only program I run with it and I wouldn't live without the virtual XP for that reason:-).

The problem is the player has Windows 7 Premium - for which the XP VM will not work. It only works on Professional and Ultimate versions. I understand you can download the XP VM onto a Premium installation but it will not run.

If it was me I would upgrade, but it is for the player to decide.

I did find there are other solutions, the How-To Geek website has an article about using the free VMWare player but this solution does require you have a copy of Windows XP which you can use. No doubt there are other options available.

As I understand it you can get the XP VM to run on Windows 7 Home or Premium, if you pay for it. Of course, upgrading to Windows 7 Professional (which includes the XP VM) might also be an option, I don't know what the relevant prices are.

I use Windows 7 home premium with Microsoft Virtual PC 6.0.156.0, It's a free download from MS.

After you install & run that, you have a empty virtual machine that you then load(edit: install) XP into.

Then I make copies and rename that machine, two files *.vmc & *.vhd, so I have whatever number of virtual machines all the same.

I add dropbox to the machines where I keep all my Stars files so I can be playing a game in one and running a battle sim in another.

With Dropbox all my files stay up to date so I can Save & Submit a turn in a virtual machine and then upload the turn in Windows 7 using Autohost Client

I think the cost is $90 to upgrade from Home to Professional. There is a link from your start menu to do this, they call it anytime upgrade.

Not the cheapest option, but the easiest is your other options aren't working. Though many do play through dosbox it would seem or other virtual environments.

I'm using win 7home premium too, and the oracle vm works 100% fine for me.
Just get the wix xp iso using google and ask a friend (hello there!) for an extra winXP serial if they have it... (sure thing).

It's not the easiest.
Perhaps the easiest Legal option yes, but not the easiest option... Wink
If u want another legal option, refer above post. Cheaper too and legal to boot.

Wow. Thanks for an overwhelming amount of replies. Very Happy
However, we managed to fix the problem. It seemed like dosbox didn't create the .ini-file in the right place. So I gave him a copy of my own stars.ini wich he put in the correct place, and after that it worked just fine.
I'm not sure how or why, but now it is working ^^

Thanks for all help, guys (and\or gals). This forum seems awesome. Very Happy

That will work as long as you don't play in the same game. If you are using the same stars!.ini file, then you are using the same Stars! serial number, which will trigger the copy protection if you are playing in the same game.
