There's a difference of 5% in density.per.planet(dpp) and about 4% in distance.between.planets (dbp).
Not as much as the 33%-50% reduction in planets.per.player(ppp).

Calculations:
90 ppp (6 players) to 60 ppp (9 players) or 45 ppp (12 players).
1200*1200/540 vs 1600*1600/910. (dpp).
2667 ly2 pp vs 2813 ly2 pp.
51 ly vs 53 ly radius between planets on an average (assuming it to be in the center of it's space and no galaxy clumping. (dbp).
Thus a theoretical warp8 either way.

Congratulations!

Well, it does change the density so why you would have more stars, each one would be further apart and that would mean some people would have to change their race files and it's just too close to the deadline.

Ed

A well-designed race should be flexible enough to handle the unexpected.

I wouldn't mind a roomier playground either. Twisted Evil

(BTW, I sent my racefile to Torben about 50 mins before the deadline. Rolling Eyes )

10 races in by 18th Jan (as per the last time zone in the world Razz), so I say if you have your race ready, then let's go for the lucky 11 !!
Just mail the race before torben gens the universes and finalizes one.

Also let's nudge up to a roomier Large universe as well?

So 2 questions :
Torben, what's the latest status (race count/universe status)?

Ashlyn, may we move to a large universe with 11 players or stick to a medium universe with 10-11 players (depending on ccmaster submitting before torben gens).

Regards,
Nmid.

ps - I am going to be playing on a dosbox VM machine.
Gawds.. I really have to get that win98 iso and get the oracle VM running soon :s

Edit - updated thoughts and words.

many people that think they like large, will either drop from a large game or vow never to play in one again

It seems to run almost perfectly under wine. (Some lists, fe. the select next tech to research list, show less elements than they should, but you can still select any of the elements using the mouse wheel.) I think a linux VM with wine on it would probably be easier to manage than a w98 wm. Also, you could actually allow outside IP connections (for the autohost utility) without turning your machine into a nest of viruses.

Oh, dosbox works fine but the user interface is slow, painful and sluggish enough for you to feel you are in hell.
Will check on the WINE option tmrw, but iirc it was a linux option only.

Edit, btw don't think this is an ideal game for you to come back to stars with.. Too many sharks in this game.....zzzz.

Oh I was quite good back then. Been playing a dozen sandbox games to prep, and reading the aar's to see if there have been any major tactical shifts since I was gone. Doesn't really seem like too much has changed.

Wine has the advantage that it isn't emulation, so things are snappy and fast. Yes, it's linux only, but honestly, if you are going to run a vm, it's probably easier and simpler running some common modern distro, and running wine under that, than it is to run some ancient 16/32 bit version of windows.

Good evening (or whenever you live Wink) to all of you.

Now that my son is in the bed and I have my glass of Bunnahabhain besides my notebook: Everybody who sent in a race file up until this very second will be in the game.

I will post an updated race status in a minute as soon as I have everything collected out of my Inbox.

Regarding the Universe Size, I'd like to leave the final word to Ashlyn, who initiated the game. I gen what you want.

Cool

Pansies... Those who love Huge will only play Large and the lesser arenas only because too many people (for a lot of understandable reasons) shy away from the really big games. Pirate

Ok, we now have 12 players (in alphabetical order):

Ashlyn
BeeKeeper
Braindead
Bystander
Dave (Racefile still corrupt)
James
Little Eddie
Loucipher
M.A@Stars
Neil Howard
Nmid
TunaFish

Except Ashlyns and Daves, all Races check fine. Ashlyn is trying to get me his password and I have contacted Dave regarding the corrupt race file. I have notified Ashlyn about this so that he can decide wether to delay the game generation or not.

Please note, that I'm a bit busy on Friday/Saturday, so it is quite probable that it'll take until Sunday until I get the game together. Depending on how fast we can resolve the issue.

Sorry for the inconvenience... I simply didn't have time during the day to take a quick peek at the new race files (my job is quite hectic these days).

UPDATE: Ashlyn finally found the password, race is fine. Very Happy

Dueling let the game begin! Dueling

sorry i wasn't around to comment.. you guys are funny. i have been in communication with Torben regarding my racefile (yes i forgot my password already.. really it was an o and not a 0.. i'm so schneaky i fooled myself Razz ) anyways, i was pretty stuck that this was gonna be a medium game.

i won in a huge game before. almost all german players.. was fun. in late game the 512 fleet rule was every year... if you didn't have a ship on the planet you built your nubian, your nubian disappeared. so i had a ship on every planet, and as the nubian was built it merged with the ship on the planet, usually a minelayer. now.. imagine the MM having to separate all those nubians every single year. MM nightmare. had a great time! want to do it again Smile someday.. not in this game.

sharks? we got sharks?? oh my! Not Worthy

yes Torben.. i'm one of the only females playin this game! wOOt 2
