I can't seem so figure out how to password protect race files. I believe it used to ask me after creating a race, but now it doesn't. I'm using 2.6JRC4. Any suggestions?

Thanks for helping a beginner out.

To password protect your race file the method I would use is:

1. Start a new Stars! game.
2. Click on Next in the first window which opens - leave all the default settings as they are unless you want to actually create a new game at the same time.
3. Right click on the blue diamond on the first entry on the list of players which will appear next.
4. From the drop down menu select Custom Race/Open.
5. Browse to your race file and click OK.
This will take you back to the list of players. Right click on the top blue diamond again but this time select Edit Race...
6. In the window which opens, the third box from the top will be blank and you can enter a password for your race here.
7. Click Finish.
8. You will be prompted to re-enter your race password and save the race file. Use the same name for the file as there is a bug in Stars! if you try and alter the name of your race file - so leave this unchanged. Otherwise the re-named file will be reported as corrupt. If you want to change the race name you will have to create the race from scratch again, but this time with the new name you want to use.

You only have to enter the password in once per session of Stars, so if you keep Stars running and open password-protected files, you should need to enter the password in the first time, but not the subsequent times. At least, that's been my experience.

If you add "DefaultPassWord=XYZ" in the [Misc] section of your Stars.ini file, where XYZ is the password for your race file, you will not be prompted for the password at all.

If you mean when you create the race, there's no prompt. It's just an option located under the race name(s) in the 1st tab of the race creation process. You can add a password to a racefile previously created by editing and saving it. Work at computer

Use the same name for the file as there is a bug in Stars! if you try and alter the name of your race file - so leave this unchanged. Otherwise the re-named file will be reported as corrupt. If you want to change the race name you will have to create the race from scratch again, but this time with the new name you want to use.

You seem to be mixing things a bit. It's not the file's name that triggers the bug, only the race's name. Shocked

Also, there's a workaround of sorts for the "racename corruption bug": you can change the race's name to something longer without a hitch. To shorten the name, OTOH, needs to be done one letter at a time between changes and saves/reloads. Whip

Thanks for the clarification. I experienced this bug a while ago and had forgotton it was the race name which was the problem. My unreliable memory has been playing tricks again.

Didn't know that! I'd always just created a new race from scratch, making sure I got my race's name right before continuing on.

Good to know!
