For those of you who still have your original Stars! packaging, what does it look like?

I've created this page with three 'box covers', but all I know about the first two is that the former blue lightning/red circle cover is the thumbnail from (I thought Home of the Underdogs but I originally said at Wikia I got it from Gamespot) and the second one with the chevony-star logo came from Amazon. The third 'Xplosiv' cover I scanned myself from the DVD case slip/cover thingy I purchased from Tuomas in 2002.

What does yours look like? If it's different to mine (including the first two) Can you email me a scan? or upload it to the wiki? Where did you buy it from? when? How much did you pay?

Mine looks like the first example. The original. Except your picture is clipped on the left. To the left there is a label, sideways from top to bottom that says: "THE PREMIERE SPACE STRATEGY GAME".

I bought it from Empire Interactive.
When and how much? Late 1990's or 2000? How much?
After more than a decade and some losses of data in a few hard drive crashes, parts of my memory crashed too. LOL

Inside the paper manual it says:
(C)1996 Entertainment International (UK) Ltd. All Right Reserved
Published by Empire Interactive

Oh, and the top of the back cover it says:
"THIS BOX CONTAINS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO RULE THE UNIVERSE"

But that hasn't happened yet. Very Happy

EDIT:
I probably bought Stars! in mid-1999.
I saved some files in a past games folder, which survived hard drive crashes. The oldest games I found I played, based on the date of the xy file, were three games I joined in Nov and Dec 1999. Back then, some of those games were by email, I started on AutoHost later.

Shocked According to my records, in 2001 I didn't sleep.
No way did I get any sleep that year.
I found 16 games with xy files dated somewhere in 2001.

Mine looks like the first one. Got it for free from a friend. He says he bought it in the late 90's. Doesn't remember what he paid for it, but thinks it was less than 20 USD.

Cheers,

Abandonia site is high on hosting box shots of games it has a review of.

I'd love to have full res versions of those boxshots Gible. I would give them to Abandonia so they can host them.

Mine's the 3rd one, only with the image filling the whole box, no frame, and a smallish Xplosiv logo. It also says "REAL GAME PLAY". Cool

After a couple years toying with the limited shareware version, one bright morning I stumbled upon a magazine rack where one of the games mags included a couple CDs, and one of them was Stars! Very Happy

Alas, I didn't save the mag itself. I don't remember reading it at all. Rolling Eyes

I don't have my box cover any more, but I do have the printed help manual and a printed technical reference which has all the components with their pictures and stats. Both of these items have the middle picture on their cover.

I had bought the 2nd one (twin pack) about 15 years ago for roughly $10.00

Best money I ever spent on a game.

Oops! My bad. Had a brain fart? I was thinking outside the box? Smile

I think my focus switched to CD cover when I saw your pictures and my CD cover was a match to the first picture. Then on the CD back cover, at top, it says "this box contains everything...". I thought the box was the same front and back. But box is gone.
Wasn't too long ago I did some cleaning and a whole bunch of empty boxes got trashed.

I'd like to second that.

Any good quality scan of either the box, the manual, the CD case, whatever, will be sent to Abandonia.com to host it there alongside the review. Smile

The front of my tech reference manual is different to Ron's. I'll scan it later and post it. I think this is because it is a UK version - on the back appears: FBK - STARSCDUK
It looks very like Ron's box front.

Later....

Ron,

There were 2 books with the CD. The User Guide and the Tech Reference. The latter is the same size as the User Guide and has 26 pages - well 25 numbered and a blank one at the back. The cover of the User Guide is identical apart from "TECHNICAL REFERENCE" in the black oval instead of "USER GUIDE". The front of the CD cover is also very similar.

I am not sure why "UK" appears on the back of the Tech Reference as it is not a UK specific booklet I think - armour is spelt the US way - "armor".

Inside the User Guide it says packaging design and artwork by Sharon O'Neill.

I bought the one in the first box after playing the demo some time in the 90's. I still have the hard copy manual and tech reference. Much latter I bought one in the third box for $5 in a Harvey Normal sale bin, so I could play a LAN game with my kids.

Have fun.
