I had orders to pop drop all set up, it worked fine the previous planet hop jump. I was surprised to find out that I did not drop any pop. Where is the 100 pop I uploaded before moving? The real question is where is my 10,000 Pop that was in the the ship? I now have to send the ship back for more.

Was it a pop-drop for tech exchange? Perhaps on a red planet?
Check your messages once, if you have any about pop dying off.

Apart from that, I'm sure you have checked X-1 year file to confirm if you uploaded 100 pop.. (right?)
and you checked X year file that 100 pop was dropped on a planet (colonised already? or occupied by another race?)

That's the max I can think of for now.

Thanks. I don't have back ups sadly. But the planet was red but there was no way 10k pop would disappear. Id only lose like 1% of them if anything.

EDIT:

Ok so I double checked current year. I have a message for the planet saying that 400 of the other players pop crushed mine. But I also dropped 400 and I think he dropped less so I should have took over. But That still cant help me explain where 10k pop went.

Was it 10k or 100 pop?

As I understood you, you popdropped 10k last year, picked up 100 pop and dropped that this turn.
Red planets with 100-200 pop, do end up getting uncolonised.

I'm assuming the 2nd red planet was already colonised..
Though it shouldn't make a difference as pop dies/grows before WP1.

...

but that means that you should still have the 100 pop in your fleet, as planets get uninhabited before WP1 as well.

Are you sure you uploaded the pop? Razz

ps - You can't be AR ofcourse.. and I'm sure you would have said if you had radiating engines killing of colonists.
Darn it, now I want to know what happened.

Was the other player a WM? double the attack str.

Also, even if he wasn't a WM,

Population grows/dies
Waypoint 1 unload tasks
Waypoint 1 Colonization/Ground Combat resolution (with possible tech gain)

so if you both dropped 400 pop, he could possibly overrun your defending colonists as he is 1.1 times stronger (rounded up, right?).

I am missing 10,000 population, not 100 pop just to clarify. Its not on the previous planet and 0 pop on ship.

ah.. 100kt, must have been a typo in the 1st post.

So.. I say they defected to the enemy.
It happens.. especially when you have a message saying that 400 of his pop took over the planet.

ps - you really should edit the stars.ini file in your VM and add backups=50... it should be in your win folder Wink

The game uses kt so I guess your right. K in the US is the symbol for me meaning thousand.

I am pretty sure I did not unload all. Even If I did I would have some pop on the planet due to the planet only having less then 400 of his pop on it.

hmm.. so that means the 400 pop is after the battle.
Perhaps that means that you DID drop the 100kt pop, but the other guy dropped that many too.
Been some time since I've had a pop-drop (and no.. I don't one in KFIAPB Razz).

I'm coming up with the most basic possibilities as I've realised that the far-fetched ones rarely happen Razz

If it was a duel you were playing, you could see if he has the backups of the last turn.

I so understand what you mean! I have exactly the same problem and even now, after more than about 20 games played, I still have to double and triple check about every turn to make sure I don't make that mistake again. This system is so frustrating to me too... Confused

On another note, how can you not have backups? That's really a must. How could you check on intelligence collected a few turns ago to confirm or deny something you are not sure of anymore?

All you have to do is create a new directory with a number and copy the .xy, .h, .x and .m files to the folder. After that you simply need to double click on the .m file (after association) and you have your old turn in front of you in an instant. You can even open multiple instances of STARS! at the same time.

It really help for the kind of problem you have. It might simply be because you clicked on the wrong button (cancel, can happen more often than you'd want) and send no colons or not enough because you didn't cancel the previous order. With proper backup it would be a breeze to make sure of that.

Well for awhile now I have had to use Stars dos box and I could not find the stars file in windows 7 to change the ini file.

I just recently found out that dosbox has its own windows file for stars. I just haven't looked up the thing I was suppose to copy and paste into the ini file so it would automatically do back ups.

As for manually doing it every turn I am to lazy to do it.

But I know there was an error with my pop because no matter what I set my orders to. There is no order that I know about that kills all pop in a ship.

I guess sense I don't have back ups to prove anything there isn't really anything anyone can really do except think I am talking out of my rear end.

Nah... More like nobody can be sure because there is no way to make sure.

You should really think about doing backups. It takes me 5 seconds flat every turn to do it... Depends on how you set it up really. With DOSBox you need to mount an actual folder of your HD, so it should not really be harder than normal to do it. You simply need to locate that folder first.

It really save a lot of guessing hassle like this one. Trust me.

"Dump cargo", which can be automated, and manually dropping to an empty planet. Deal

Perhaps "unload all" (including colonists) can do it too, but I seem to remember there were some safeguards in that case. Sherlock

There is indeed safeguards against that. I see those messages all the time when I send cargo ships full of colons along with a colonizer ship: just like versus a SB which would kill the colons, the captain rescind the order.

The reason why I still do it that way is because it create a message when it happens. This mean that I can zoom on the freighters and make sure I don't forget to unload the colonists. Otherwise it would be a big waste.

I have never tried to unload colonists by hand but I always assumed that the captain would also rescind the order. That is pretty much why I think it was most probably a player mistake than anything else. And why the first I'd do if it would happen to me is recheck the last few backup turns.

Edit: typo

I wish I did do dump cargo or unload all at least I would still have my pop because planets were not empty.

Eagle of Fire is right It is important to have back ups I should get on that this week.

Something like this happened to me a year or so ago, when I had bombers dissipate into thin air. I had no back up to prove it happened. Maybe I will learn my lesson. Smile

I am using XP and what I do is create a folder named "backup" in the decicated game folder I always create. Basically, all the files related to that game goes in the dedicated folder.

Everytime I download a turn and I have another turn in the folder already (so you probably guessed I start at the second turn) I create a new folder, name it by the number of the year (first one would be 2400), copy all the files required to start a new client of the game (I listed the minimum files earlier) and move the directory in the backup folder. Then I delete only the .m and .x files and bring the new .m file in.

The .xy file is always present and the .h file is never deleted, meaning the following turns works as intended. Meanwhile, the files copied keep the structure of the specific turn in question before it is modified by the new turn to be played, which make them true backups of the turn in question.

I don't really know what you will exactly have to do to achieve the same thing with DOSBox... But the principle should be about the same.

Change "1" to whatever player number you are, in your current game.
Save the following as "move.bat" in the game directory.

md "new folder"
copy *.xy "new folder"
move *.x1 "new folder"
move *.m1 "new folder"
copy *.h1 "new folder"
ren "new folder" done

The most likely scenario is that you had your waypoint set to a distant planet but you decided to hand tweek your waypoint to somepoint in space mid-route. The game will keep your "unload all" orders to that newly added midspace waypoint... your colinists will get dumped and never seen again.

Just a thought.

Except that is he was doing pop drops with someone else, he was jumping in one year to the next planet.
Even with backups you might find you made no mistake.
Anomalies happen in programs and Stars! is no exception.
I've seen quite a few things happen over the years that weren't always attributable to mistakes made. Often it was a glitch in the generation of the turn.

I agree because you are not the first to speak of this to me so I will have to go with that it just randomly happened.

Thanks to everyone else about ideas and telling me about the back ups.

Confused2 cost? I don't charge anything to run SAH, nor do I charge anything to do this kind of thing. SAH keeps the last 5 turns as backups, and game hosts can use Host Utility to restore one of those. Game hosts can ask me to send them a zip of the game's backups if they wish. No charge. Cool
