I've been working on a little utility to load universe and planet info files as provided by Stars Report Dump.
So far it shows player data based on planet pop size and they are ID'd by colors on the map. The larger, 200k+ planets show pop size, and the colored area around planets is based on pop size.
If you have a game with some good scanning data, please send me map and p files for testing purpose, and I will send you a picture like the one in the sample below. PM or email me the files.
The sample below is a test picture of a large universe played against AI races.

Looks interesting.
Using quotes to make message easier to read in sections.
I have been using Strategist (1 game) and SNB (number of games) for the same purpose, so from only looking at the image file in your post, yours has :
Chapter 1 | Pros -
1. Nice index.
2. Pop numbers.
3. Name placing and number placing not overlapping.. Kirk(S1)/kirkland (S1)/Wilbury (S3)/Mobius (S6)/Castle (S3) are well placed.. not sure about BlackHole (S4) due to the planet clump.
However Smithers (S9) was the only exception that I saw.. perhaps it was a name of another planet right below the main planet?
Cons -
1. Name placing for bigger planets - Red on red for eg. S3
2. Not sure about features.. planet names, customisation options, exporting
|
Requests / Things missing in SNB_Strategist
Chapter 2 | Planet names
1. Show all names of planets (needed for a starting map)
2. Identify HW's based on report dumps with a special icon?
(hate doing it manually every game I play)
3. Show names of planets of relevant planets only - inhabited planets, planets with starbases or planets with gates.
(Would help with tactics and clear up a lot of unnecessary names.)
Perhaps like SNB use boxes to identify gates/docks.. but for deciding relevant planets, have a custom box to decide the population limit to be taken.
4. Can have customisable options to show certain planet names that you want.. even if they are not important as above.
(Either by clicking on the planet or by adding a list of names

Chapter 3 | Time Maps
Strategist has a really nice graphical universe timeline.. but I have used it for only 1 game for 1 player data.
Leads to a few more observations, as below.
|
Chapter 4 | Adding 60 years was a pain though, as you have to add .p files one by one.
Ability to mass import .p files by selecting folder or multiple file selection
Situation > 60 yearly reports of 1 player.
Situation > 5 yearly reports of 10 players.
Situation > Adding random year reports from different players.
Reports could be named before importing as "gamename_year.p#" to help with the correct reading by the program.
|
Chapter 5 | Ability to export time graph as a .gif
Once you make it, it should be able to export all the years as a .gif.
I couldn't figure out how to do so with the strategist.
|
Chapter 6 | Do you want to test it more as I have loads of .p# data
>(yearly data from 2400 to 2460 for duel games)
>(yearly data for one player and scattered data from different players)
Completed games - Duel games only
As for the completed games.. only have duel data and I don't want to reveal my .p data, till I finalise my next duel race design. (You are playing the championship )
I could test it out for you if you want, for the completed games if you would like
Multi-Games - Still in progress
However the main games are from games in progress ... so would request that the data be kept private, like Xyligun has assured.
I trust the hierarchy, so would be ok sharing it with you for testing purposes, but wouldn't want the final images to be posted for everyone to see
|
Phew. Long post.
Nmid.
edit - Chapters made. I live and learn everyday

Well, it's a new project.
New languages are always a challenge and best way I get motivated is to make a program for something I enjoy, like Stars!
I wanted sample P files from others to test for possible load errors.
I already learned a couple things about P files from another member. He sent map and eight P files and two of them I had problems loading. Turns out P5 and P7 files had a couple of planets with only about four columns of data versus the others, so I had to make a work-a-round for that, to get rid of loading errors.
Another problem I found with my own P files is that the routine wouldn't load a P file with a "#" character in it, which Stars sometimes adds before production columns on some planets. The fix was that I had to change the comment character. The load routine happened to use "#" character by default, and considered any data on a line after the "#" as a comment only.
Hmmm... maybe merging P files would be a good idea.

Are you going to post your utility?
I was thinking it will come in handy for a particular game I'm in.
Perhaps I can be a alpha-test user.
I know my minefields.. but I'm a chaff sweeper.
