hmmm... you are right, but how many would refer to stars calculator for past travel, when stars! already shows it to them.
The MM will be too high for them on a regular basis.
I would generally use it only for future travel.

Finally, consider a enemy with full scanning, no planet hopping (or full pen-scanning)... can you hide your point of origin in the 1st year?
Planet hoping and 2 year jumps, would not work in case the fleet is under scanner coverage in the 1st year.
