Hi!
craebild wrote on Wed, 16 March 2011 18:10

Balancing the PRTs was never the intention of the WoL games.

IMO the greatest "unbalancer" is allowing movement of early ships and not allowing to intercept them. The more starting ships a race has, the more planets it can scout. But nothing can beat a JoaT here: with 3 starting ships with built-in pen scanner and 50 turns of forced peace a JoaT will likely scout the whole universe.

I'm not exaggerating: JoaT can start with RHRS - a tech-6 scoop engine. A "scout" with RHRS and 40LY pen-scanner is able to scout a whole 400 LY long "arm" in ~20 turns. So in 50 forced-gen turns such JoaT could scout all arms. His own and of his ally he could scout with staring freighter and remote miner, who too have scanners.

IMO starting ships shouldn't be allowed to move.

BR, Iztok

Did the JOAT teams win the first Wheel of Life games? If not, who cares what JOAT can do before the others. Cool
Stars wasn't designed to be perfectly balanced. If so, we would all be only playing CA's. Razz
Good players can win with lesser races.
I've played in games where IS won, JOAT won, IT won, WM won, HE won, SS won, AR won, SD won... just haven't found a PP winner yet. But very few play them in the first place.

I'm interested and need a team mate.
Consider myself an intermediate player so would like to be placed with an expert. GMT = 0.

Welcome to the game Galien, when it gets to start.

That is 6 players now, if everyone is still interested, with 4 of you needing to find teammates. Perhaps the 4 of you can find out who plays with who on your own ?

Galien, while two beginners certainly shouldn't be teamed up for this game, that doesn't mean an intermediate has to be teamed with an expert. That doesn't mean you can't be teamed up with an expert, though, especially not if you find your teammate on your own.

I'm a bit more than intermediate: been around awhile. Played a lot of games and even won a few Smile

I guess that makes Galien and I the most experienced of the 4 singles. Which suggests we each team up with one of the others. OTOH the others are both -5 GMT which makes it much easier to work together and I'm sure Craebild could offer them advice.

I don't mind which straw I draw Laughing

I will offer advice on race design and initial strategy (for the 50 year jump), but later advice would be unfair, as I have access to all player's turns.

Centaurian, a 9 hour time difference could make things difficult, but I don't see how you can avoid a 9-10 hour difference with the current other prospective teammates. And a large time difference doesn't make it impossible, I live in Denmark and have played with an ally who lives in Tasmania, that's a large time difference.

Since you've allowed 100hrs between turns, there should be plenty of time.

Now we just need to assign players Smile

I dont mind who I team up with either.

No one seems to be making any suggestions though!

btw... it sounds as if there is not too much difference in skill between me and the so called "beginners".
I came 2nd in my last game, but we we're all playing AR (which I dont usually play) and the winner was one of the best players I've ever gone up against.

I could definitely do with some general advice on how to start this game, as I have not played in these conditions before.

I'm willing to have a go at playing any of the PRTs except AR, PP and HE (I imagine it would be difficult to colaborate without gates?).
All the other PRTs look viable to me. In fact some races that I have never considered desirable start to look good with the right team combination.

Sorry, you've been pipped to the post by leknufrag,

Now all we need is another 2 players.

So if I understand it correctly it is leknufrag & Galien as team 2 and LittleEddie and Centaurian as team 3 ?

There is nothing to prevent you from designing races and discussing what orders to set for the 50 year jump start now, that will just give you more time to do that, while we are looking for the last two players.

If you have any questions you can PM me or send me an e-mail. I have set up an e-mail address for this game, that is wolv AT craebild DOT dk (substitute as appropriate, of course).

One piece of advice here: For the 50 year jump there are two ways to set research. Either stick to one field, which will give you high tech in that field but poor tech in the other fields after the 50 year jump start, or set research to lowest field, which should get you to tech 9-11 in all fields after the 50 year jump start (if you aren't getting at least some fields to tech 10 there is something wrong with your race).

I'm already thinking of design ideas Wink

Is Accelerated BBS Play going to be checked or not?

I see it's Medium/Normal/Special but I can't find anything on
Slower Tech and BBS Play.

Yes, I looked on the Home Page.

Thank you

I was going to stay away from Stars until I remarry in Feb/Mar 2012 but, since this game is set at max. 100 hours, I should be able to fit this in despite my busy life right now.

However, I have not sought a partner at this stage AND I will be in Beijing from June 6-14.

My level is probably advanced intermediate (5-6 wins from 9-10 games from memory).

My timezone is GMT+8 (Philippines) but will change back to GMT+10 (east coast Australia) sometime late this year.

Whaddayathink? Do I look like too much trouble?

@nmid and BeeKeeper: I am sorry to hear you cannot take part in the game after all.

It seems we need three more players now to start the game, any comers ?
