Coding Bugs
Race File Corruption:
If you edit the race name in a race file can cause the file to become corrupt. This is especially common when making the race name shorter than before. To get around this, when editing the race name, either edit it one letter at a time (saving and re-opening each time) or copy the race data into a new file by hand.

Does this tip need to be updated for the newbies here?
This does not seem to be the accurate/easiest solution. Edit one letter at a time and save and reopen. Using the above method, to change the race name from "Humanoid" to "Robotoid" would take a lot of saves and reloads.
NOT! Only takes one save on my system. You know why?

It should probably say something along the lines of "to shorten the race name(s) do it one letter at a time (between save/reloads)" Rolling Eyes

As m.a says it should probably say something like "to shorten...".

Changing the race name from "robotoids" to humanoids" does not change the length of the race name, just some of the letters, and the bug is as I understand it related to shortening the race name by more than one letter.

The simplest way to avoid that bug is to decide on the race name when you first start designing the race.

Right on! You just can't make the new names shorter than the old names by more than one character at a time.

An alternative to naming races, like when testing them for possible later use in games is to simply name them with short, two or three letter names. Like IT1, SS1, etc.

Then when you want to use them down the road you can just rename them, add password, and save under new file name. Reload to test, then send to host to join game. This way you can use them again in other games even with different names without having to do a bunch of saves and reloads when you want to use shorter names.

Darn it.. I didn't know that.
I tried saving my race file 5-6 times before I gave up, because I kept getting those error messages.

I wanted to rename my race to a simple Nmid.
It is now called Nmid_Horses.

Sad

I agree...we should update the known bugs to clarify that.

But *that* particular post would be better marked with This information is out of date - go here for the latest version

And then update this post and the wiki page instead.

When I need to make such a change to one of my race files, I just open several STARS! clients at the same time, hit F8 and redo the whole race file completely.

I must be strange. Laughing

I've never hit the bug, but I'm more than capable of recalling the entire details of my race files, so that's what I'd do too, except I wouldn't need two Stars! clients.

Unfortunately, I haven't memorised the entire race wizard. Mad Laughing
