Does anyone know why the ini file located in C:\Users\Per Rindom\Local Settings\VirtualStore\Windows gets updated (e.g. when changing screen layout), but does not use NewReports=1 feature?

It was my understanding that Windows 7 don't allow you to save files outside of the specified folders at all.

In such a setting, STARS.ini should not even be created in the Windows folder...

Maybe I've been told wrong?

As I understand it, Windows Vista & 7 both fudge programs write access to the %windows% folder by overlaying the files in C:\Users\Username\Local Settings\VirtualStore\Windows. Thus for Vista and 7, stars.ini is in this directory instead and Stars.exe can't tell the difference.

This behavior can be controlled by the user, via settings. Different versions of Windows 7 treat this somewhat differently.

In any case, the game might have weird behavior if the directory in which the game is saved is too long.

This is a remnant of the old DOS mechanic. The limit is probably 256 characters.

IIRC more a limit of only 8 levels of the DOS directory structure.

I tried to remove the write protection of the c:\windows folder and placed a complete ini file in there also, but that didn't help either

Also, I can't find Stars in the installed progams section of Control Panel.

It wouldn't. The stars.ini in C:\Users\Per Rindom\Local Settings\VirtualStore\Windows is definitely the one being used - it is being updated.

Stars! predates the install systems win95+, hence the just copy and run, no installation first.
