I was considering a game that focused more on the early game tech and am also looking to encourage the lesser-used PRT's with less reliance on arbitrary point restrictions. The "rule set" so far, with commentary:

*No construction of any ship hull or component requiring tech greater than 12. (exceptions: planetary scanners and terraforming tech automatically upgrade with research, so are allowed)
---Also considering allowing AR to use Death Stars, if by some miracle they survived that long.

*SD banned
---With only lower-tech hulls available, detonating fields seem like they'll be too powerful.

Some random comments on what I think the effects on the game will be:

-WM strengthened with battlecruiser hull, since battleships wont be around
-SS access to ultra cloak with weaker
-HE metamorph can be a good counterdesign hull against cruisers
-best armor is neutronium
-300/500 stargate unavailable
-Best torpedo is jihad, best beam is miniblaster
-Ultra Station becomes a significant threat

Any thoughts?

Still in the concept stage. Likely a small universe with enough players to make it reasonably crowded to promote early conflict.

Also, SD could be allowed, but detonating minefields forbidden.

Some years ago Per and I had a similar idea:
* weap and con mustn't be cheap
* no BBs
* no missiles

Here the announcement:
* New Game: Antiballistics

And here the game stories. The result of those rules was rather astonishing: Hordes of bazooka-cruisers ruled the game... something I am still wondering about.
* Antiballistics game ended

It was certainly a fun game and added a different feeling to Stars than usual.

Sounds interesting, I'd make exceptions for a few techs though, eg. allow Epsilon torpedo and possibly Bludgeon, all bombs and at least some PP drivers (since defenses auto-upgrade anyway), and the race-specific electrical toys (flux capacitor, tachyon detector, energy dampener). Maybe Ultra-Miner too.


Galleons could work decently well as warships in this setup, hmmm.
