Please Help Me

Hi Celebrinbor1,
I run Stars! in Oracle Virtual Box (running Windows XP) on my Win7 64 machine. This program is free, and useful for running other 16bit programs. I would be happy to walk you through setting it up on your machine. Do you have access to Windows XP installation software?
You can download the Oracle software at virtualbox. PM me here if you care to schedule some time to go over the setup.

Am quoting this because another new player with a Win7 64-bit machine is trying to get Stars! to run. Running virtual machine failed, probably due to a basic Win7 purchase vs. the more expensive ones. DosBox also is a commonly suggested solution, but seems to require more setup. At least that is my computer-challenged impression.

As if Neil hasn't done enough for others, like remapping for latest Dynamic Duos game !!

Look at the link named Quote:
download DOSBoxStars.rar 4.92MB
.

Unzip and start it out right from the box.

The only issue I could foresee is if DOSbox don't work with Windows 7, which I don't know about.

You can download the ISO from MS, but why?

DosBox is limited in screen size but works fine.

DosBox is truly horrible in it's UI and general lack of smoothness.
I would miss a turn, than struggle with a turn in DosBox Mad.

I would suggest that if you ever owned WinXP in the past, feel morally and ethically free to download a bootleg copy of the OS from a torrent and install it on a Oracle VM.

I have a 10 GB VDD (or perhaps a VHD) with all my stars files + dropbox + utilities loaded up in the VM... and the Oracle Virtual Box install file on a 16gb pendrive.

I know my minefields.. but I'm a chaff sweeper.

Hey - I use DosBox on a tablet.

It's like being back in the days of 10MHz PC's with a 25MHz "boost" button.

But yes - your XP install has suffered failure, use the license on a VM - it's on the edge of legality, but they'll not chase you for it. You don't even *need* to have dropbox on it, you can share the drive out to your main PC, and have *that* run Dropbox.

Ok.. he's up and running.
Checklist to follow.

STEP A
Install dosbox to
C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74

Check : Type
C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74
in START>RUN.

if it opens up and shows you a folder, (as per my screenshot), Step A is done.

STEP B
Unzip gible's files in
C:\

Check : Type
C:\DOSBoxC
in START>RUN.

if it opens up and shows you a folder, (as per my screenshot), Step B is done.
IMPORTANT > Make sure you don't have C:\DOSBoxC\DOSBoxC
It happens if you unzipped to C:\DOSBoxC

STEP C
"C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -conf C:\DOSBoxC\dosbox.conf
YOU DONT HAVE TO TYPE ANYTHING IN THE VM.
Just run the shortcut.

If stars run, Step C is done

For images on the path structure:

I believe, I have done everything right up until step C. I remember doing this when Nmids screenshots were still active and helpful to me visually.I am not sure what to do. Anyone still familiar with this can maybe explain.

I have dosbox installed and I installed and extracted dosboxstars to dosboxc. Guess I am confused on where to put "C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -conf C:\DOSBoxC\dosbox.conf. I just cant get my head around this step. Read talk about mounting but dunno what that means. Is it a fancy word for renaming a file?

You can set up a "ShortCut",

Right click on your desktop and select "New" & "Shortcut".

click the Browse button and select "Dosbox.exe" and finish that.

Right click on the new shortcut and select "Properties".

Edit the Target line so it's like this "C:\.(your path)....\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe -conf C:\DOSBoxC\dosbox.conf"
(note the quote mark is at the end of '.conf' not '.exe')

That should do it.

I created a shortcut using the dosbox icon in the main folder. Figured it was more fail safe.

I go to properties and get "C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" so now I just add -conf C:\DOSBoxC\dosbox.conf" to it in the target? You mentioned to take out the one quote after the .exe which I do.

I do all this and get an error saying it is invalid.

suggestions?

1. Did you install it in
> C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\
or
> C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74

2. Can you reconfirm and tell us where you installed
> dosbox (DOSBox-0.74)
and
> dosboxC (Gible's files)

3. If you followed my old post's steps, then try using this in the shortcut ....
"C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -conf C:\DOSBoxC\dosbox.conf
copy that exactly, with no changes to the " marks.

Installed dosbox to C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\

My dosboxstars files are downloaded into the downloads folder. Is this the problem and if so where should they be installed instead.

From my phone, so copy pasting
Install dosbox to
C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74

Check : Type
C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.74
in START>RUN.

if it opens up and shows you a folder, Step A is done.
This step a is just so things are easier for me to explain. U can use ur existing install as well, but .....

For the stars files
STEP B
Unzip gible's files in
C:\

Check : Type
C:\DOSBoxC
in START>RUN.
If it open, u did it right.
