I haven't played any of the MoO series games but reading different overviews and descriptions brings the feeling that Stars! and MoO have many common concepts.

What are the major differences between these games in gameplay? Are they truly different? Why Stars! is better? Razz

Hi!
You can get MoO-1 for free on the 'net. D/L it and play some games and you'll see for yourself.

Thanks, I was going to get MoO and MoO 2 and try them but what I'm really curious about is the opinion of those who has played both MoO and Stars for decent time to be able to compare their gameplay (mostly in multiplayer of course). Or maybe there are some MoO communities like autohost?

One major difference would be that MOO isn't multiplayer...

...tho there may be fan patches for that like there is for Master of Magic.

I played MoO yeeeaars ago, must have been before Stars! Don't remember much of it but played it quite a few times, wasn't a bad game. Never played it in multiplayer, don't even know if that was possible ... IIRC the AI had personalities and were capable of diplomacy.

No costum race design though making it a lot less rich than Stars! ...

It seems MoO 2 has some customizable race features as you can see here http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/17/Moo2RaceDesign Menu.png, but yes, this doesn't bring as much game diversity as race design does in Stars!.

Ok, I see, MoO is not suitable for multiplayer. But what about MoO 2? At least there is "Multiplayer" button in their main menu Very Happy

I've tried MoO 2 for a short time and the first impression is the disappointment about stars being the only waypoint targets. I mean the player can't fly into an empty space he has to choose some star. This simplifies game greatly (is it the reason AI is so cool in MoO? Very Happy ).

Also I've found free clone.. oh, sorry.. the game which is inspired by MoO - Freeorion. Currently it is not playable but the project is active. Graphics are cool too. I think guys are going to create multiplayer-driven version of MoO Smile .

Like Gible already pointed out, the main difference is that STARS! is built and meant to be played multiplayer, while MoO was one of the first very popular 4X game and thus was built to be played in single player mode.

Other than that, I never seen another turn based 4X game which shared the point and click interface of STARS!. I can't say I know the reason of that, but it does make STARS! unique in this aspect.

Another nice 4X game to try is Spaceward Ho!. It is a fun and fast paced game very similar to MoO.

I love Moo2. I played it even before I started playing Stars! The AI wasn't that bright but it was a great multiplayer game. It had customable races and ship designs and an interesting approach to research where you are usually limited to research only one third of the possible things and are forced to get the other technology by trade, conquest or by espionage.

I would like to play this classic game against other people. A typical game lasts about two to three hours (depending on people's skill and special rules like "no attack for 30 rounds").

Anyone's interested? Smile
