Hey everyone. I started playing in Dig It! earlier this year after a long long time of not playing Stars! but then had to retire when family issues combined with a new job that involves traveling between cities every week ment I couldn't carry on.

Now mum is home and we know she will be ok I want to play in another game again but I still have the job issue so I was thinking would it work if I played Stars! off a USB stick, I could then do my turn on my work computer no matter where I am (only during lunch time of course Wink

Yes, that works fine. I do it when I travel, on family and friends computers. Just remember to bring your SN along. The game will ask for it on a new comp, and install "stars.ini" on in the c:/windows directory. The only issue there is that you need rights to put it in there if you want it permanently set.

Password is saved as a hash, so no worries about it getting stolen. lol

Note- only use one computer to submit a turn. Or, you can load a half done turn on another comp, then delete the xfile, and resave the xfile after completing the turn. Otherwise you might trigger the emperor bug, IIRC. Can someone confirm that?

I use Stars! only on USB stick and had no problems with it. I am palying at different comps and there was no problems with save& submit. Just you need to provide SN any time you play stars! on new computer.

And make back up from time to time Smile

The Emperor Mess will only bite you if you're doing some other race's turn too (on more than 1 computer). Deal Whip

Airports while waiting for a delayed plane are great too, if you have the batteries. Cool

To be a little more specific, the emperor bug happens if two races in the same game are submitted with the same serial number but different machine ID.

As the machine ID is written to the .x# file when the .x# file is first written, while the serial number written to the .x# file is the serial number last used to edit the turn, it is possible to trigger the emperor bug if two turns are finished on the same computer, but one of the turns was first edited on another computer.

The solution to that problem is simple: Load the turn in Stars!, delete the .x# file and save & submit from Stars!. That way the machine ID and serial number are both set to match the computer which the save & submit was just done on, and Stars! does not complain about several players using the same serial number, as long as they submit from the same computer.
