Supposing I hosted a game with the following gen schedule:

2400..
24 1hr gens until 2424 - (1 day)
24 2hr gens until 2448 - (2 days) (3d total)
24 3hr gens until 2472 - (3 days) (6d total)
24 4hr gens until 2496 - (4 days) (10d total)
etc...

We could get a whole game played in less than two weeks! Shocked

Of course there are a few catches...

  • Clearly you'd be better off having a team of players spread out around the world and playing in shifts.
  • Players dropping out would have to be an "oh well, you lose" deal as there probably won't be time to find a replacement.
  • Race balancing penalties are probably a good idea.
  • Getting that many players would probably be difficult.
  • May interfere with other games.

So.. opinions? questions? (yes I know I'm insane, thank you for that opinion Wink )

When would be a good time to start? My thoughts would be either a friday pm/sat am eg 0800 NZST Saturday (2000GMT Friday) giving a whole weekend to get through the 1hr/2hr phase then a nightmare midweek-midgame and probably a decisive weekend.
Leading furthur to, which weekend? is there a (global?) long weekend available?

How many marriages/relationships do you intend to wreck? Wink Not to manage the health risk! And who needs a job anyway?

Besides that, neat idea!

Christmas/New Year. Or Easter.

Both of those give an almost free week.

However, two sets of players would be a must, stay up longer than 72 hours and you start getting a free acid trip.

Much would depend on Universe size and number of players/teams. Deal Whip

They'd conform to "global long weekend" sure, but available? I'm not so sure...to answer Micha's question...as few as possible - if this was expected to last much longer than a week I wouldn't even consider it - and is also a factor in why I made the turns take longer - by the second week its 4hr turns. Hence my suggestion of a team working in shifts. Sleeping Sleeping Hit Computer

some of us a getting too old for that sort of nonsense. Laughing Also the knowledge that it will stop in Xhrs goes a long way to making a trip a good trip, which doen't apply to non-sleep. Lurking

How so?

I keep thinking that blitz settings would be good, but then I remember that (assuming no life) you're getting a normal amount of time to play anyway(not counting diplomacy). Also, I've never blitzed so I'm unsure what the factors that make a good blitz game are beyond race balancing that I can look up.

As for number of races, practically, I imagine it would have to be however many we can get, altho if there were a sufficient number of players they'd probably start eyeing each other up into larger teams & therefore fewer races. Generally I'd guess 6 is a good minimum to prevent the game from degrading into an us-vs-them. Arguing

And here I am loving Stars because it is a pbem-game which allows to choose the time when to play instead of becoming the slave of an MMPOG played in teams.

Evil tempterer... be banned!

I agree wholeheartedly with Micha.

This reminds me of the days when I played chess. A bunch of people used to meet at a pub in the Sydney CBD & occassionally we would play pub chess. AFAIK it was something we invented tho I've seen something similar in recent years.

Anyway, the idea was that if you took an oponent's piece you had to skull a prescribed amount of beer & not light beer, this was normal 4-4.5% alcohol.

Queen = 2 Schooners (1.5 pints)
Rook = 1 Schooner
Bishop,Knight = 1 Middie (half pint)
Pawn = 5 ounces

Typical amount of beer consumed if you won would have been about 4-5 pints.

I never won 2 consecutive games Cheers Shocked 3

A couple of years ago I sent some beer glasses to a mate of mine who now lives in Polperro, Cornwall (the required sizes are not available in the UK) so, if your interested, you might be able to find a game there. Not sure which pub though, try the Noughts & Crosses or Blue Peter Very Happy

You can buy chess sets where the pieces all happen to be shot glasses Wink

on topic: I could be tempted to play Gible's game, perhaps even Iron Man style, without bothering with a backup team Wink Depends exactly when it happened though.

Another way to play it... 1 hour gens for a day... then a day off... 1 hours gens... day off... 1 hour gens... day off... etc. Still get 'jetlagged' though, playing like that, but at least you'd get some respite.

Hi!
You're a bunch of kamikazes. I admit Stars! is a nice game, but the Real Life is nicer, and I know my priorities. Wink

I'm pretty sure I'd be rubbish at this type of game. I think it would take a special type of player to do well.

To use another Chess Analagy, Alexander Grischuk is a Grandmaster in all forms of Chess & was even ranked in the top 10 back in 2005 but has never progressed past the semi-finals in standard Chess. In Blitz Chess (5 minutes per player for the entire game) he is undisputed World Champion.

This is actually why I'd like to try such a fast game... I normally spend much too long working on barely-significant details each turn, minute optimisations. It'd be nice to simply not have time to do that (and not have anyone else having time to do it either Wink Also I get frustrated with slow games (I really consider anything slower than 36 hour gens to be slow, and have almost always been frustrated at how 'early' the games I've been in have slowed from 24 hour or M-F gens to slower schedules.) It just takes soooo long to see the benefits of your actions.

'Real' blitz Stars would be too fast though. I don't think I'd enjoy playing with just 5 minutes a turn or whatever schedule they keep / used to keep.
