Trying to find wargaming, sci-fi, or fantasy role-playing games for a partially paralyzed vet. He has a Vista laptop and can only operate it with one hand. It is much easier for him to use the touchpad than the keyboard.

Seems like only older games are turn-based, but some stil run on Vista. What I have found for him that works so far is:

Civ III (one of his favorites)
Outpost I (he is happy with that)
Star Trek: Birth of the Federation (just getting started)
Jagged Alliance II (installs on my Vista but not his)
Heroes of Might and Magic (he got bored quickly)
Fallout I and Brotherhood of Steel (he has not played yet)
Disciples II (he has not played yet)

Haven't had time to install or try these out for him:
Ascendency
Galactic Civilizations
Warlords III

Unfortunately, Stars! needs too much keyboard interaction for him to play well.

Does anyone have more suggestions??

Caesar I-IV/Pharaoh/Master of Olympus (city builders)
Civilisaton I-IV,FreeCiv
Colonisation,FreeCol
Dune
Ironseed
Master of Magic
Master of Orion I,II
SimCity(s)
The Incredible Machine
Transport Tycoon Deluxe, OpenTTD
Warlords I-IV

Some of those are abandonware or more simply old and may require emulation to run.

Your friend might enjoy Massive Assault or Galactic Assault.
They are turn based scifi ground fighting strategy games. The latter is based on the book "Prisoners of Power" by the Stugatsky brothers(which recently came to the bigscreen as Inhabited Island).

You could have a look at Good Old Games at http://www.gog.com

Old games, but:
Quote:

All games are Vista and XP compatible.

Thanks to our handsome programming team, the classics are now Windows Vista and Windows XP compatible. Now you can use your lightning-fast PC to unleash the full potential of those games you just couldn’t play properly on that busted old 386.

Have a look at their strategy section.

Glad if I could help. Let me know if it's indeed true what they say about making all games vista compatible ... There are some dirt cheap games there that bring back a lot of good old memories! Smile

You might check out wargaming.net

They specialize in turn based strategy games. They have two online strategy games which are free to play(with a watermark).

Alpha Centauri might be a good one to try. Similar to Civ3 which you said he really likes.

Try Wizardy 8. It is a single player role playing game with turn based combat. You customize the characters attributes, races & class, which is where a lot of the strategy comes into play. There is an active forum for this game at IGN with lots of tips and strategy info and links to mods that players have made. This game has a story, but the story is not linear and because of the character creation aspect and the mods it is a game that is replayable, I can't remember how many times I have replayed it with a different set of characters that I have created and the different mods.

Hi!
Sorry for being late, but I can recommend Space Rangers 2, available for digital download at several sites. A mix of just about everything in the gaming genre and with low hardware requirements. Planetary and esp. hyperspace battles will probably make him some problems (both are RTS), but IIRC the game can be finished without them.

Wizardy

I found a 97 Japanese remake of Wizardry I-III with new 3d textures for the dungeon, new 2d sprites for the monsters, and much improved music. With a kit I was able to get it mostly translated. A 1981 classic brought back to life. It is the tits!

www.gog.com is having a Holiday sale, some games cost less than 4 dollars! You can get 10-15 or more good old games for the price of one new one!

You mentioned Jagged Alliance II, it's now down to 6 dollar. Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business for less than 4. And these versions should work on your cousins Vista. (did you happen to try one?)
I bought about 5-6 games so far, they all ran without any problems on Vista.

Thanks for the update.

My cousin's situation is becoming more challenging by the day, so he may not be able to play much.

I had old copies of Jagged Alliance that I was able to run on Vista and enjoyed them.

I also ordered M.A.X. from gog.com and thought that was good too.
