Greetings,

when leaving home, I only got my MacBook while my PC stays at home. But I haven't figured out, how to get Stars! running, and I didn't find any hints on the forum - I hope I didn't miss them. Right now I see two paths 1) Parallels Desktop & Windows XP or 2) Wine on Mac:

1. Parallels Desktop to get Windows XP running on Mac
On the first attempt, I tried to get Stars! running on my MacBook (MacOSX, 10.5.6, Intel) using Paralles Desktop (V4.0, Build 4.0.3810) and Windows XP. With every other programm, Windows XP is doing fine - but not with Stars!
Trying to start the program, I get the following error message (in German, English see below):

Datei "\\.psf\Home\Documents\95_games\stars\starsjrc4.exe& ;quo t; (oder Komponente) nicht gefunden. Überprüfen Sie, ob der Pfad- oder Dateiname korrekt sind und ob alle erfrdlerichen Bibliotheksdateien zur Verfügung stehen.
Here the screenshot: http://www.geffers.info/stars/images/stars_windowsxp-on-mac_ error-message.jpg.

The translation is about: the file or components of starsjrc4.exe cannot be found at the given location; I'm asked to check the path and the libraries.

Well - I'd say, I did. And as I got Stars! running on my PC, I guess I know where to put which file (hyperfind.dll & ctl3dv2.dll into the windows\system folder). It seems, this doesn't work out using Parallels Desktop and Windows XP on a Mac.

Any hints? Anyone got the same experience or maybe even a solution?

2) Using Wine on Mac
I didn't go this path to the end yet, because it seems to need pretty much installing first (Xcode 3.x Developer Tools, MacPorts), before you actually get to install Wine. And then I'm still a little afraid I'll face the same wall as above. Well, for now I'm following this guideline, if time allows
http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/

But if anyone already got experience concerning the latter tryout or the first or any other for that matter, I'd be very happy.

Regards,
Leon

Regarding the error from 1), The latestversion of Stars (2.6jrc4) doesn't need either of those two files to run normally. You could try running an earlier windows version.

As for 2) Stars has run fine in wine for linux for some years, I've not heard of anyone trying it with a mac before.

A third option, is to run DOSBox for Mac using Win3.1 - this has everything you need except DOSBox itself and a serial code.

Please let us know how you get on cause I said here that MAC users don't seem to play Stars! Laughing

Hi,

just a quick update:

1) I got Stars! running with the option "Parallels Dektop" and "Windows XP". I had to put the Stars! files into the folder c:/programms/stars. Everything running fine. I don't know about absolute and relative paths - maybe it didn't work out with the "special layer" of Parallels in between.

2) I didn't finish the attempt with Wine. I think I managed to get Wine installed, but I don't know Wine well. TBH - not really or not at all. Without command lines offered to me, the "command line" is more lie a blank page, where I can leave "pleas and curses" Crying or Very Sad
As Stars! doesnt have an installer file, I think I didn't keep on track. That's why I haven't been able to get Stars! running on Wine. But I think Wine is working, so if anyone can give a hint concerning the matter - much appreciated.

3) Cross-Over. While trying to get Wine running, I stumbled upon Cross-Over, which - to my humble knowledge - is a "branch" of Wine with a frontend for semi-competent users. Like me Smile Rolling Eyes
With the help of Cross-Over I got Stars! running in some "bottle" or how they call it.

So - the good news is: Stars! ain't barred from Mac. But the bad news is: 'Til now I only managed to get the programm running by using programms you have to pay for. Wine would be the only option to squeeze out of that (if you don't have windows / parallels anyway on your Mac.

Regards,
Leon
