I have a friend whom im trying to get into this game but he is having some problems with running the game on Windows 7 beta. Here is the email he sent me.

Quote:

Here's a good one for you. I'm running Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 (on x86 system), and the file that reads the .HLP extention is no longer included with Windows at all aymore, as well the work around for this problem for Windows Vista users or Windows Server 2008 (theres a difference) doesn't seem to work on Windows 7. How funny is that?

I asked him to try Dosbox and see if that works. Anyone have any other suggestions about this?

DOSBox will never work: this is a Windows 3.1 program. When he will try to run STARS! DOSBox will tell him that he can't run it.

The only way you could run this game with DOSBox would be to install and use Windows 3.11 in DOSBox. However, if you ask your friend to do that he must be very carefull: do not install Win 3.11 on your real c: drive or you will overwrite your current Windows installation.

Mount a new drive as C:\ with DOSBox and then install Win 3.11. Do not mount your real C:\ drive.

Could he try to use the file from Vista or XP, and run it in compatibility mode ?

He might have to start the .hlp file from a desktop icon to do that, rather than directly from Stars!, I do not have any experience with Windows 7.

I also seem to remember that some publications of Stars! had the manual in PDF format on the CD, and the manual is effectively a printout of the help file. My Stars! CD is unfirtunately defunct now, so I cannot check whether I had it in PDF format, but perhaps someone else can help ?

this has the 2.6/7i manual and the 2.6b help file in .doc format. I thought I had a copy of the 2.6/7i .doc help too, but apparently I don't.

Wasn't there an HTML version of the hlp file? That should be portable enough. Cool

That html is no good. I extracted it too some time ago. Most links are dead, and rebuilding them is not easy. Confused

Fixing that link was easy - forgot http:// . The html hlp pages themselves are a whole different story. I agree the extraction was very crude, but at least its there, and I don't have time to rebuild it by hand - would almost be easier to just rewrite it.

I did some link rebuilding around Xmas. Wish I had more time for it. Confused

Also, the contents seem in need of some reorganizing.

But you're right, at least the bulk of it is there. Cool
