when overgating ships is it better to send 1by1 or to send in large group?

It doesn't make a difference.
But it's surely of help to give them WP-1 merge orders with best a xport (or any other ship) at the target planet to repair the overgating damage in the same round.

is there a tool or math to determine if and how many ships will be "lost to the void" due to overgating?

Stars Calculator v3.06:
http://starsautohost.org/files/starscalc306.zip
A handy tool, look there for overgating.
But it's a very rough calculation or rather: there is quite a probability factor in it which makes you sometimes loose more and sometimes less ships.

What Stars Calculator gives is the average number of ships lost, based on the probability of loosing a ship. It is possible that no ships are lost to overgating, or that all ships are lost, but those extremes are of course less likely than your loosing a number of ships near the average given by Stars Calculator. The chance of loosing a ship to the void is checked for each individual ship, so Lady Luck may smile on you, or she may take all she can take.

is there a specific distance of overgating that triggers ships being lost to the void?
or is it just always a percent chance that rises with the distance & weight of ship

Most of what needs to be known about overgating can be found in the time-honoured Stars! Advanced and Technical FAQ v1.1:
* http://www.starsfaq.com/advfaq/guts2.htm#4.6
Additionally:
* vanishing happens only for mass-overgating or when the accumulated damage exceeds 100%
* losses to the void occure as soon as you get over the safety mass (plus a very few kt due to rounding)
* ships of ITs do get damage but they aren't lost from overgating

Mmmh, playing a non-IT I am just discovering that I am loosing ships to the void due to distance overgating. I always thought losses to the void only occure with mass-overgating or when the accumulated damage exceeds 100%?

I'm not sure that I've played IT more than once in a non-AI game, but I overgate all the time. What I don't do is overgate both mass and distance at the same time. I also try to have a SFX at the other end that I can merge with to instarepair the damage, but I overgate alot even if there is no fleet with which to merge. I also try to keep my overgating to under 130% of rated mass/distance. Yeah, I lose some ships and some of my ships end up entering combat pre-damaged, but it seems well worth it to me to have the extra weapons and shields.

I remember reading it somewhere, but I can't seem to be able to find this answer again.
Does a gating fleet take into consideration the sending gate or the receiving gate when calculating damage or calculating the range? I think it is only the sending gate, but I could be wrong...
Edit: Typo...

Bill Butler says... | When distance overgating, only the limits of the sending gate are important.
When mass overgating, the limits of BOTH gates are relevant in calculating damage, but only the sending gate is relevant in calculating the chance of the ship vanishing.
