Ty to all who posted and helped so far. I have another question ill ask here I dont think i should have to make a new thread every time i have a new question.
Ok here is the situation.
I was playing against AI and I bombed an enemy planet killing off all there colonists and got the bombing report.
Ok but here is the strange part.
I had no bombers on that planet any more and there was clearly no battle report. I checked twice.
Is this error even possible? Just disappearing seems far fetched.

Did the report mention your fleets and their ID? Sherlock

Perhaps you were genning multiple turns? Also battle doesn't happen if the enemy fields no warships.

Have you played the next turn after that? If not then you could backup & double check what was supposed to happen.

I remember reading somewhere that there is a limit for the number of ships you can have in a same fleet (1022?). If you go over that number then some ships will disappear. Ships with the highest ID number will disappear first.

Edit: I've also just found this in the Wiki.

When a ship design is deleted, all such ships vanish leaving nothing behind. (moral: scrap before you delete!)

The limit for how many ships of the same design you can have in a fleet is 32767. I think he'd have mentioned it if there were *that* many bombers.

Possibly deleted though.

Did you have a colonizer in the same fleet as your bombers and did that fleet had orders to colonize? If the planet was killed than the colonizer order would have converted the entire fleet to starting materials for you new colony. You wouldn't be the first one to make that mistake. Wink

Foolishly I gave up information in chat against the person i was dueling about me having the b 52 design now in play because i asked if he had the same error..

I had 48 old frigates i should have scraped but instead i sent them to die in a big battle.. But in my battle screen the frigates were showing up as 48 b52 bombers instead. Can anyone tell me why this happened and is there away to prevent it from screwing with me again?

To bad it didnt change them to 48 battle ships and work like them to..

You probably deleted the old frigate design after the battle & designed a new B52 in that turn. If you did that then the battle would show the new ship design & icon but the battle result correctly treats the ships as the old frigates.

A similar thing happens if you scrap some ships or deleted a slot & used the same slot to design something. If you delete a slot & don't reuse it you will see a message re. the scapping that does not specify the ship name.

Methinks you should renew your Bomber-flying license ASAP. Twisted Evil

Otherwise, the most likely explanation is Alex's.

You should probably get into the habit of having backups of your most recent turns. That way you could check them in cases like this one. Deal

M.a.Stars is right. I always back up my own turns. I copy the current turn XY, M, X and H files into one directory named after the year of the game. That way all I have to do is to associate the appropriate M file to STARS! (.m1, .m2, etc) and double click on the M file in a given directory to have another client of STARS! pop up with the right year.

When I looked at this thread, I assumed that you did and checked the last turn to see if you could not get some correlation or something wierd which could explain the problem.

I have had a related phenomenon with some freighters going missing. All single-ship fleets, all departing from systems that had gates but flying through space rather than gating. None made it to their destination, nor did they just sit still at the system of origin. Four ships now have vanished into the ether.

I went ahead and poked around in my backups and discovered that the ships were given correct orders, but instead gated out to the highest-numbered system I owned that had a gate. Which explains why I occasionally had more transports there than I was expecting - I had chalked that up to forgetting about already ordering a ship to go there and ordering another to go as well. But this past year a freighter carrying pop departed (through space) from a system that had max pop and the system ended up 'growing' pop. Ships dump cargo before gating, ergo the ship gated. No message, though. But checking around, sure enough that fleet was in my eastern-most gated system. Same thing for the ships that previously went missing.

Best I can figure it was a glitch in the .x file. I normally delete mine prior to saving each time, and I can guarantee that was done before submitting this latest turn. I may however have done a save without deletion beforehand. Perhaps something went wrong then and got loaded with the .x file the next time I opened the game.

Weird. And unlike any other previously published bug. Confused

Is that a game with any kind of special setup or any external tool was used to create/modify it? Sherlock

Welcome to my world. I've had the battle board show me a different outcome than the actual battle, though reinstalling fixed that so I have to assume the .exe got corrupted somehow in that case. I'm thinking of reinstalling again since this is the first time I've had this problem.
Quote:

No, normal game with no special changes. One thing of note, the transports were never alone in the system of origin the year they moved. Maybe it was a mixup with fleet numbers in the .x file.

I do a lot of merging and splitting of fleets, and generally at the start of a turn if there are transports in a system that have no orders I will merge them. Reduces clutter while I'm looking at other things and I can quickly tell how much transport capacity I have available. If some orders, like say the split, manual load/transfer, move and wp1 unload came after a previous "save and submit" then maybe they didn't get recognized.

Like I said before I delete the .x file while the game is open before doing another save, but maybe the submit part of it got loaded in as well? Normally I just save and only save and submit when I'm done with the turn; but if the deadline is close I'll do save and submits just so I can do a quick submission if need be. I guess in the future I'm going to have to do just saves even in that situation.

Had any of your planets perhaps "Route"-orders?

Automatic planet orders to route ships to another planet. Wether those are on or off can be seen here... see link for picture:
* http://stars.arglos.net/img/stars-route.png

For gating those can be quite tricky because they work only for ships within the weight- and distance gate limits. If those are met, ships are gated, if not they are sent thru space (I think... not sure wether possibly nothing happens or a message gets displayed a year later)
