Fine with me if nobody else voices disagreement. Send me a race file by noon CST Saturday. ( randrews@geekfu.org )
Edit: We should probably move to a medium-sized map with four players though, small would get crowded fast.

Hehe, small is large enough for 4 players for sure.
With 4 players I'd suggest:
Universe size: small
Density: normal (128 stars)
Player Positions: farther
Accelerated BBS Play
To give you a relation: Your 4th and newest player, Combat, plays in a small packed universe with 9 players at the moment.
Size and density is quite important to have in mind when designing a race. So you should decide soon and stick to it.

If you don't notify Ron otherwise, he WILL set you up as the host and thus giving you access to the interface (to set genning times etc.)
It's not uncommon that the host is also playing. But if you want a 3rd party playing the host, just ask. Usually somebody helps out.

The not hosting thing was in reference to accidentally seeing something I shouldn't. It's not an issue if I have access to the AH interface.

I am inclined to agree with Altruist, small is plenty for 4 players and normal density would have a good mix of clusters and empty spaces, great terrain to play in. Although its your game so you do what you want. Posting the complete setup of the game - size, density, distance between starting positions, game options - slow tech, Acc BBS ect. Also any diplomatic rules or race restrictions. This makes it clear to the players what to expect and what is expected from them.
Im not sure why Altruist recommended the farther setting instead of distant but that could be my inexperience.

Well, as this is my first multiplayer game, I'll just go with what Altruist proposed. Sounds reasonable to me.
I'd prefer no alliances, since as I said, I do suck, and don't want to let down any hypothetical allies.
As far as the race file thing, I'm not going to look at them, not that I'd know enough about race design to change my strategy if I did. If it's an issue, you can mail them directly to Ron Miller, or one of you can take over hosting, either way is fine with me.
I'm just trying to make it easier on everyone else, taking care of of the administrative details.

Not that I don't trust you... But I think it's still a valid question.

That's what the password is for you should set for your race file. It prevents anybody looking into your race file and additionally you need to type in the password to open your m-file (where your turn is stored in).

Tests indicated that "farther" gives better fairer starting positions in duels (and since the number of player in this game seems to be 2+...)
I agree with Combat. By now you should pool together the parameters of your game, the number of min./max. players, diplomacy, skill etc.. Post it here or in the proper section: "New Game Announcements" (add wether you are looking for somebody to take over the hosting/interface side) and since race design depends heavily on those parameters, only then it is usually the time to announce a deadline for race files. Games between 2 players are usually as informal as you started this thread, games with more players tend to go along more formal lines.
PS: Stars games require quite some time and it's always a shame when a game stops midway because the parameters weren't set properly... or in a hurry like "Start playing first, discuss the rest later". Nevertheless I'll stop interfering and mingeling into your game now... your game after all.

Hi guys,
I might suggest that you keep alliances in the game, but that maybe you include Public Player Scores. This way, if one of you starts to take a commanding lead, even if your race design sucks you can still possibly gang up on the leader a bit. This helps to keep the game fun and balance out different skill levels in a beginner game. You might learn more this way while still having a lot of fun.
Just my two nickels,
John

Okay, to give everyone time to make their races, I'm saying that the game settings will be:
Universe size: small
Density: normal (128 stars)
Player Positions: farther
Accelerated BBS Play
No pre-game alliances
Public player scores
24h turn schedule, or as soon as everyone gets them in, whichever comes first.

Well, Combat said he would drop out, but I'm in favor of waiting a day or so for magic9mushroom.
Got your race file, btw.

Go ahead without me.
EDIT: Basically, I'm going to be all over the place until after Christmas at least. I doubt you can wait that long, but I'm ok to play after that.
