I first played Stars! roughly a million years ago, when it came out originally. However, I was never very good at it, and only recently started playing it again.

I'd love to get into a duel with someone. Probably won't take very long. Smile

I don't want to join a larger game because those appear to have teams, and I don't want my inevitable sucking to bring pain to my teammates.

Incidentally, Stars! works fine on a Mac under Crossover. Since it'll also work under Linux (with Wine), and not under Vista (it's 16-bit code), that means that the only platform it doesn't run on is the one it was originally designed for. Isn't that hilarious?

I am willing to join a fast game. Not fast enough that it would become a blitz, but let's say a 24 hour/turn game which would never slow down even in case of holidays?

I also don't know how hosting a game on this site works, so a vet would need to step up and explain everything if you don't either.

That sounds good to me. Tiny galaxy, two or three players (I know I said duel, but I mainly just don't want allies), 24h turns?

I think there's a FAQ one of us could read through.

I have no objections to more players as long as they are newbies too, but tiny is quite small to my taste. I can live with it though.

Lets not forget that some games here take months to end the sign up phase. The more players we wait for, the longer the wait...

Okay, let's move the universe size to small then. I'm just trying to ensure the game ends in a reasonable timeframe. Smile

Looks like the first step in hosting a game is emailing to be put on the waiting list, so let me do that and if we get a third (also newbie) player before the game starts, great, if not, duel.

Edit: Just asked to be added to the list.

There isn't a waiting list nowadays. Autohost can manage upto 100 games. Usually duels aren't hosted at autohost, though, to reduce the workload for Ron but hosted by one of the players. I'd suggest the following:

* don't wait for more players... over christmas it will be difficult anyway and a 1:1 is a fair thing while 3 players...

* one or perhaps even both of you can play the host... don't use autohost. How to host is explained in the Stars! help-file, search for "Hosting Modem and Email Games".

* set a password to your file race

* discuss your prefered generation schedule like 1 turn/day including or excluding weekends... what about christmas?

Have fun playing.

After your duel, you are legitmate to join our Duelling Club. Don't forget that duels have a different logic than the usual 6-16 player games.

Fair enough. In that case, I am happy to host. I'll just generate turns as soon as I get files, so the early game doesn't take forever, if we want to do more than one turn a day.

Go ahead and send me a race file (you can email me at randrews@geekfu.org ) and I'll set everything up.

I recently joined Starlink.org #STARS!, and they have a blitz (or duelling) bot. I believe it would be more appropriate (if they can bring it back up) since it would serve as the ultimate third party.

My understanding, from this comment:

http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=405 0&start=0&rid=1265&S=469b0025bdf543db39bebef2e25 8d141#msg_num_8

is that Blitz games do more than one year per turn, and are kinda complicated for new players.

However, I did just get an email from Ron Miller saying that there's a slot available on the Autohost for us, if we want to use that instead of one of us hosting.

I don't think we need more than 24h/T. When it will get more complicated later on we'll probably wish we had more time! Very Happy

Edit: I'm all for starting the game on Autohost asap.

I am currently in the process of designing my race. What kind of deadline are you giving us?

Also, I've read somewhere that it is considered very bad form to play in a game you host and also be a spectator, or whatever that mean. You should check into that early so you don't accidentally do it or whatever...

If I'm sending it to the Autohost, I'm not hosting anything.

As for deadlines... I dunno. Two weeks is what the email says.

I'm for including him, if for no other reason than it's apparently not worth hosting duels on AH.

On the other hand, I don't want to wait forever. So let's say, I dunno, noon Saturday is the deadline for race files in. I live in US Central time.

And you can email me stuff at randrews@geekfu.org , or there's probably a way to post files here.

I see that you have ICQ... Do you use MSN?

Edit: And BTW, it's really a bad idea to post your email in a forum. You are better to send us a PM with it instead.

Stars v.jrc4 works fine on Vista. I'm running Vista Enterprise and having no problems running Stars.

Must be Canada or Mexico, then, I guess. Any further south and you live on the ocean. So my guess is... Manitoba? Smile

Far from there. I live in Québec.

Thing is, with the time saving mode we spend roughly half the year at -4... And the other half at -5. Razz

Oh, I was looking at the same longitude, and you were cheating with strange Canadian clock-shifting. Smile

Not that our daylight savings time is any better. Especially now that congress changes when it happens all the time.
