More to the point, I believe, is that time-of-flight even via gate is non-negligible for a universe larger than Medium. Hence Mahan style war becomes impossible and a war for territory with sneak attacks, blockades, and feints results. Unfortunately, this sort of war is the one with the most MM.

I suppose this is why universe stretching is so popular these days? You get the deeper strategy of big spaces without the nightmare MM of so many planets.

What we need's a few good taters.

Mao-style war doesn't work very well in sparse universes IIRC.

You mean there is no grand strategy until there are 1000s of nubs in the air? By the end of shizo we controlled 50% of the universe, without a good overall strategy (fighting on 5+ fronts, some 1000ly apart, with the same fleet of BBs?) and only "skirmishing" we wouldn't have gotten that far ...

Well, lots of skirmishing can amount to a "grand" strategy. Twisted Evil

But I basically mean that no single battle decides the war, and you can lose on one front and still carry the day in the rest. You can lose 50 planets and still have good chances to win. You can destroy 1000s of enemy numbs and still need to fight to beat your enemy... Pirate

You can have a "real" war in a smaller universe. It just tends to be over too quickly after only a half dozen minor battles. Razz

So many Stars, so few Missiles!

In space no one can hear you scheme! Deal

And on top of that there are the mobility hassles which are so fun to inflict on an opponent and so unfun to get inflicted on you.
